JAL, who are widely known for having the highest taxes in the industry have yet again increased their fuel surcharges, adding up to US$116 to the average Australia-Europe/USA return trip.

Go JAL...lets see if you can be the first airline whos taxes top A$1000 on a return ticket!!:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

Worst part is I've seen (and experienced) travel agents advertising SYD-EUROPE-SYD or SYD-SFO-SYD return for $1400+++ on JAL. The +++ takes it well above $2000.

It's definately an unfortunate situation, but one the agents have little control of as they can't advertise including taxes and appear competitive but advertising excluding taxes looks misleading.

It has got to the stage where it is almost meaningless looking at airfares advertised by travel agents unless you have a rough idea of how much extra the airfare will cost with the surcharges.

Gone are the days when the taxes not quoted with the airfare were only genuine taxes like departure tax.

I agree totally, with every airline having different fuel fine levels, it makes it very difficult for the public purchasing or the industry selling them.

When I first began in travel, AU-UK taxes were around $180 on every airline...now they range from $350-$1050 depending on the airline.

I have just booked 2 MEL-FRA-MEL tickets in C class and taxes for this are now $1060pp. up from $880 pre 1 April 08. Still, discounted business fares of $6080 aren't bad (compared to $15,000 full fare) and I like the JAL service.

EK would have be the only exception to this... last looked it was $175 in AU-UK return for taxes.

EK aren't quite that cheap, they include their fuel fines in the actual fare (one of only a couple of airlines who do) making it a bit deceiving, so their taxes are more like $400-$450.

Doesn't that make it less deceiving? Fuel "surcharges" are just a cost of doing business like many others and should be included in the actual fare.

I didn't mean deceiving in terms of business practice, I meant deceiving to the eye when a consumer is comparing fares, most assume every airfare to Europe is + around $500, and might wrongly assume that Emirates is more expensive whereas their fare may actually work out cheaper with the lower taxes.

As an agent, I can only applaud EK for taking a stand and paying commission to agents on the fuel surcharges, something I think all airlines should be forced to do.

Yeah I didn't mean that EK where cheap. But is rare that a lead-in fare is quoted that's and EK fare! From the passenger point of view, the otherr thing is they actually look after their loyal mileage earning customers who redeem points for flights, and only need to pay about $175 + points to redeem flights to Europe as opposed to having to fork out $500 or more plus points on other airlines.

Something we can only pray becomes an industry wide practice.
