I've just booked an award flight to the US on Japan airlines. It arrives in Narita from Melbourne then leaves from Haneda. Do they organise transfers for you or do you have to do it yourself and how hard is it?

TIA

Even if you have to do it yourself it was easy There is a Limousine bus service between the 2 airports.

The transfer between Narita and Haneda though is a more modern thing. We were always able to fly BNE-NRT-JFK. Initially straight through but after they moved the JFK service and it then departed prior to the BNE arrival they put people up in one of the hotels. Y pax basic room and nothing more. J pax better room + brekkie and F pax much better room with dinner as well.

Japan is almost certainly going to open to tourists early next month so should be no problems. I would suspect in the first few months JAL and ANA would provide the transfers even if only tickets on the Limousine bus.

Thanks - Yes they have announced they are opening in June - this isn't until November so will worry about it closer to the time (and it's FF points so can always cancel or change)

I have flown United from Hong Kong to Ottawa, Canada (via Tokyo Airports and Newark) once and had a similar connection experience in Tokyo. Flight from Hong Kong to Haneda was operated by ANA with Narita to Newark operated by United with everything on a United ticket. I couldn't check in online via the United website or app meaning I had to check in at Hong Kong airport. When I got there the lady scanned my passport and said very carefully to me, you realize you are arriving into Haneda and will be flying out of Haneda later? You will need to organize your own transportation. I acknowledged, and she lifted a red phone and couple minutes later I was issued my boarding passes.

Get to Haneda, and take the monorail into Tokyo and spend a few hours doing all the stuff tourists do in Tokyo like looking at shrines and what not. Then take the Narita Express to Narita airport. I would recommend a minimum of a 6 hour connection to account for the fact that you will need to clear immigration, collect your bag, clear customs, organize transport to the other airport, check your bag in there, clear security, etc. 6 hours may seem like a lot but remember, your flight could get delayed, you could get lost on the Metro. You need some recovery time. Ideally 12 hours is best since at least then you can do all the touristy stuff as yours truly.

In terms of COVID, you'll have to keep an eye out on restrictions. My understanding is right now a foreigner can't enter Japan to connect to another airport. That'll likely change in the coming months, but something to keep an eye out for!
