Researching a trip to Japan for about this time next year, and thought I would look at a side-trip to Hawaii for a few days. Mostly because I would really like to go to Pearl Harbour.

Seems the $$$ required for a return trip would be pretty steep though, for two adults and an infant.
As an example Korean Air seems to be about the cheap end at 200,00Y, or roughly $2500AUS.

Am I wasting my time?

I have started to look at the possibility of purchasing points through Avianca with a view to an ANA redemption.

Curious to know if anyone has any direct experience of this routing I guess.

Perth to Tokyo would be via Singapore on a VFF Award ticket.
Return from Tokyo would either be cash ticket or via Avianca type purchase.

Can you make it a circle trip ie Perth/Japan/Hawaii/Perth?

You could use your Velocity points or Kris Flyer points (you can sweep across into Velocity) and do a one way redemption ex NRT (or other Japanese city) to HNL using your VA points for a partner award on HA or DL. If you don't have enough Velocity or KF points to do both PER/xSIN/NRT and NRT/HNL you need to weigh up which would be the more expensive ticket then use poirnts for that and purchase the cheaper ticket.

You'd probably be looking a three one way tickets so for this reason you'd need to look at a LCC ex HNL such as JQ who has a low one way fare structure as some legacy carriers charge a lot more to book one way tickets. It's always worth looking at purchasing the domestic leg eg SYD/PER separately then you can opt for VA or QF and maybe overnight at the international gateway eg SYD after the JQi flight ex HNL to give you a buffer in case of any flight delays.

If you are looking at QF HNL/SYD the only economical option to fly one way is an award ticket. You could also look at NZ ex HNL as they have a LCC fare structure.

Maybe look at a star alliance circle pacific fare?
PER-SIN-NRT-HNL-AKL-PER with SQ, NH and NZ
YCPSTAR1 fare, AUD3827+tax per person ex-AU (infant under 2 pays 10%).

China Airlines fly from NRT to HNL for under $700 return if booked well in advance. Then combine with a PER-NRT return ticket.

Thanks for the replies. MattG I will keep the China Airlines option open for now.

Seeking some extra feedback on one other thought if I'm not asking too much.

As mentioned the PER-NRT leg of this trip would be on SQ metal in J, via a VFF points spend. Sadly I don't have enough for both of us to get return.
Likely to wait for redemption changes to June before booking, as SQ becomes considerably cheaper points wise. eg. PER-SIN drops from 70k to 53k.
Likely travel period is April/May 2017.

Was considering purchasing some LifeMiles if another promo comes up soon, and then redeeming for either ANA or TG to SIN and onwards back to Perth.

Have priced TG in J from Osaka (ITM) to PER for just over $2500, 2 adult pax and one infant. As a newbie to this game that SOUNDS reasonable. Perhaps I can try for 1st from ITM-SIN and then J for the last leg.

I'd be happy enough to pay that cash price I think. I have heard TG F is top notch but I suspect J will be more than suitable for me, who has only ever flown Y.

Question is can I do better elsewhere? And what are my chances of Avianca opening up another promo in the next little while?

Osaka-Itami (ITM) has no international flights. It is domestic only. If you are booking international from ITM, you have to connect somewhere (most often Tokyo Hanada (HND) or Narita (NRT). The international airport in Osaka is Kansai (KIX).

Thanks Himeno. You are of course correct. Flights are KIX-PER, with a long (40+ hrs) stop in BKK. Which would suit us fine with toddler anyway.
