Hi folks,

new member, first post - I love this site !
Am currently on silver and need 450 SC to get to gold by July.

I've learnt so much already. Thanks everyone.

I paid $3,000 for a full fare economy (last minute) trip to New York earlier this year ! and only earnt 60 SC on the way there, and 45 from Sanfran to Sydney on the teurn home (GRRR). Ignorance is expensive.

What i dont understand is the underlying economics. How can Qantas award flyers over 125 SC for domestic runs for a handfull of dollars and points when they only shell out 125 SC for a return trip across the Atlantic.

Why do JASA's earn more SC per $$$$?

Welcome to AFF.

Qantas like reward premium (First/Business) passengers with higher status earning.

Your $3000 fare was not full economy otherwise it would have earned double (120 & 90 SC's).

To get an idea, Business class has 4 time the status earning for the same distance than has discount economy and First Class has six times more.

Note that your $3000 economy fare to New York from Oz could easily have been $12,000 or more if booked in business class.

So:

  • First = 1½ x Business = 3 x "Full Economy" = 6 x "Discount Economy",
  • Business = 2 x "Full Economy" = 4 x "Discount Economy" &
  • "Full Economy" = 2 x "Discount Economy"

These are the earnings that QF have set for their zones.

For many JASA's the points cost is astronomical when compared to classic Business awards so the the SC's stands.

Welcome to AFF Tung.

just reading your post and I would suggest based on your amount of SC's they were not full Y. On international, only Y earns full SC's, the rest is classed as Discount Economy.
As for the JASA, well it is classed as a business fare, so J SC's are earnt.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

I think Y+ earns full Y SCs. When I was looking last week for SYD-LAX, the highest I could find on Qantas.com was Flexi-Saver. Which is "classed as discount economy where points and status credits are earned".
