Alright I've got a few questions for a JASA next week.. feel free to go down the list and answer anything you can - would very much appreciate some expertise from this bank of knowledge!

Trip:
MEL-HBA (Y)
HBA-SYD-CBR (J)
CBR-MEL (Y)

Firstly just wondering if I'll be able to get all my boarding passes for all flights printed at checkin in MEL? I won't have access to a printer in the window available for online checkin and my phone isn't reliable enough for mobile checkin.

Secondly the window for deplaning in HBA and boarding for SYD is approximately 45mins.. I'm pretty sure it's the same plane that continues onto SYD. Will I have any issues with this? (Have carry on only). I've not used HBA before - does the arrivals end up beyond the secure area (ie. will I have to re-screen security)

Lastly, and this one wouldn't bother me if it cant be done, but just for the sake of it, would there be even the faintest possibility of being able to switch to the earlier flight from CBR-MEL even though it's a red e-deal fare? Would putting on a giant smile and requesting this change be a waste of time? If not, where would this best be requested - SYD J Lounge?

Thanks very much in advance!

You wont be able to get the BPs for all legs at MEL, but you can check in and just get them to scan your FF card at the gate as a BP, and yes the same plane runs to SYD after landing in HBA from MEL, as for getting an earlier flight, doubtful unless QF have reasons to more forward people.

1. No - feel free to take advantage of the Macs and Printers in the Lounge at Hobart or Sydney to sort you out though
2. Yes - same plane continues to SYD from HBA, upon entering arrivals turn right immediately into the Qantas Club which is outside security, they will announce when you should go to security before boarding which is just further up the corridor.
3. Maybe - The answer for me was a 'No' last Sat when I did the same run from SYD - CBR whilst nice and shiny is not a nice place to waste 2 hours without lounge access:shock:

The Giant Smile Approach has worked for me numerous times. You just let them know that you know you don't deserve it, it's okay if they can't do it, but it would be just awesome if they could. :p

Generally this can be difficult. If you check in early via the next gen kiosks it will sometimes will give you the option of an earlier time. Particularly if it is in Qantas' best interests. For instance the later flight is fully booked with wait list, but earlier flight has space.

On Sunday I managed to get PER-SYDx-BNE red e-deal flight changed. I knew the PER-SYDx operating aircraft would be arriving an hour late, so I assumed an hour late departing as well. My connection in Sydney was very tight (45 mins). The service desk in the Perth Qantas club was able to get me on an earlier direct flight. The woman at the service desk initially said that I would be charged a fee. After explaining that it would benefit Qantas by making the change she called someone explained the circumstances and got permission to change onto the direct flight and it got credited as an economy flight.

I would suggest checking in by kiosk first and see if you are offered an earlier flight. If that doesn't work go to the service desk and try to paint the picture that the change will benefit Qantas in some way. But don't be disappointed if you get denied.
