Posted this link earlier onto the tail of the "Qantas to get 787s early?" thread but think it makes more sense to start a new one because after all this is about Jetstar's own 787s and their first routes.

AusBT reports that "Jetstar will begin flying the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in August 2013" and now has added the first routes as being Melbourne-Singapore, Auckland-Singapore and Singapore-Beijing, so the 787s will obviously be based in Singapore under the wing of JQ Asia.

Jetstar to start Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights in August 2013: Melbourne-Singapore, Auckland-Singapore, Singapore-Beijing - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

I'm stoked about this, flying a 787 MEL-SIN will be a top experience, bet there will be some AFF people cashing in their QF points to book this flight!

Sorry markis10 but I think you are letting your noticeable anti-AusBT bias get in the way here.

Yes everyone knows the JQ 787s would start sometime in 2013 but when in 2013 has never been known or stated, going back a while it looks like "first half 2013" and then "second half 2013" I think was something that Alan Joyce corrected to last year. Now we have an actual month and surely that qualifies as news?

And having JQ confirm the first three routes is also 'news' because they have not been named before. The JQ press release says "the airline expecting to put to the aircraft on its Auckland-Singapore route in 2013", no date given there, and also "The 787s will gradually replace the Airbus A330s that Jetstar uses on long-haul international routes such as Auckland-Singapore", but again here is the first story which has nailed the detail of the month and the three launch routes the 787 will launch on.

Overall, I don't think those of us on AFF consider using points on JQ to be a very good value - even on a fancy new plane.
However, I may fly on it on one of their sale fares..... but probably not.

I'm a bit tired of QF giving JQ the nice equipment.... although I recognise the topic has been exhausted.

I have no bias as such, just laugh when no news is passed off as news, yes its news that August is the date, however the routes were announced in February as per the link I posted, quote:

Jetstar’s B787-8 Dreamliners will gradually replace the Airbus A330s currently used on Jetstar’s long-haul international routes from Singapore to Beijing, Melbourne and Auckland. The new aircraft will be configured with business and economy class cabins.

Look at the google timeline as to who broke the news and then who reprinted it back in feb from the JQ press release

The news is Aug 2013 start as released across the wire four hours ago, the rest is padding or rehashed news from Nov then February this year.

AusBT jumped on a twitter post from Jetstar_Asia which nominated Aug 2013.
I think thats worthwhile reporting.

The rest is a rehash.

Any ideas on the configuration of the new 787's for JQ? Will Star Class still be the same seat? Maybe inbuilt TV;s now and slightly more leg room or is it going to be pretty similair to the current JQ Config?

Interesting how Asia gets dropped out of the news, after all its 3K which will be the first operator which is not 100% of the QF group and not Jetstar as such.

That's correct but the key here is 'gradually', that is what JQ said without any timeframe, without saying which route would get the 787 first. Now we have JQ saying all three routes will have the 787 in August so that is news.

As far as "The new aircraft will be configured with business and economy class cabins" well of course that is not news but you are splitting hairs here, it is background, just like the number of 787s ordered and their eventual domestic deployment with QF. Whenever any news story is written you always have this, you don't have only the latest 'news' in it. Nobody said the JQ J/Y seating was 'news'.

All going to be based in SIN I believe so they'll be 3K - no new routes either just the existing (struggling) ones. At least the 330s will be released back to QF mainline.

AJ was in PER this week and reportedly commented how Jetstar connections from Asia to PER would attract "wealthy Chinese business and leisure trade".

Can anyone see "wealthy Chinese" traveling in a J* A320? They might have a chance with the 787 but I'd bet it will be a long time before we see one this far west.

Don't agree. Wealthy Chinese are basically mainland Chinese who can afford to travel in the first place. Who they fly with, and how comfortable they are generally doesn't factor into most mainlanders travel plans, schedule and destinations are the big considerations. And moreso, wealthy mainland holiday makers are actually pretty stingy, they will more often than not take the cheaper route, even if they are swimming in money. It's a cultural thing. Mainlanders show off their wealth in other ways. So for example, you may see wealthy mainlanders on cheap LCC flights, but they'll have Louis Vuitton luggage, Gucci jackets, etc. That's why in China there is no huge disparity between the demographics of travellers that take Chinese LCC's like China Spring Airlines, or legacy carriers like China Eastern/Southern, Hainan Airlines, etc.

Sorry, that's a bit off topic.

This is the most ridiculous bit of fleet planning by any airline group in history (except perhaps Air Zimbabwe). The 15% cost saving on fuel combined with the premium sale pitch derived from the 787 would be much more at home at Qantas - imagine the 15% fuel saving on flights such as Frankfurt or Dallas, or on routes that were marginal such as San Francisco. Unless these basket case routes, such as AKL-SIN, that have at times only operated 3 times a week.

Glad I sold my QF shares years ago.

I just can't imagine the average JQ customer paying for, never mind caring about what kind aircraft they're flying in.

I think it's going to take some time before airlines would start to realise that the LCC model simply doesn't work for long-haul. The fact is, the longer the trip, the more fuel is used, hence fuel takes up a greater proportion of the total cost. This is something that cannot be reduced. Therefore, with these long-haul flights, no matter how they cut costs or charge ancillary fees, any cost savings or revenue increases would be minimal when compared to the legacy model.

LCCs should stick to where they perform best - short-haul point-to-point services, and potentially flying to secondary ports where legacy airlines normally wouldn't dare to go.

Yes, but just think, if one of these new aircraft crashes, at least it will only be your average JQ customer on it, no loss to us God fearing decent folk eh?
