Last week I had to attend a funeral in BNE with just a few days notice. It was my first flight in over 2 years.

The usual CNS to BNE Qantas 6am flight was not available...seems this is the one they always cancel...so booked a 7am Jetstar which would arrive in time, thinking at least I can go to the lounge etc and booked a Qantas return, all on the Qantas website. Prices were not that different but prefer Qantas.

About 11:30pm the night before my phone buzzed, I looked and Jetstar had cancelled the flight, saying "Sorry etc but ring our friendly contact team etc to rebook" Great except their friendly contact team didnt work at that hour and would certainly be no help to get me and my elderly father to the funeral.

I rang the Qantas number and as Gold (and at midnight) it was answered in 10 minutes or so, the lady could rebook me on another Jetstar flight but we would definitely arrive later than the funeral. I thanked her anyway and she said I had to argue with Jetstar about a refund. I booked a Virgin flight that arrived in time and we made the funeral and the Qantas flight back was OK.

On return I had to "livechat" with a girl on the Jetstar website, she could see the cancellation etc but said as I booked via Qantas I had to call them...Grrr

I got busy and didnt do anything for a few days then noticed some $$ refunded to my CC. This was probably about $50 MORE than what I paid for the Jetstar tickets. The Jetstar tickets were 9500 points and $45 or something each...yet I got back about $95 each...

Is the extra $50 compensation or something??
I have not got any points back yet...do they take longer?
Should I just shut up?

Sorry about your loss...

Sounds like it was a Classic Reward booking:
CNS-BNE on JQ = 9,600 points + $45 taxes
BNE-CNS on QF = 12,000 points + $50 taxes

So it seems the taxes for both sectors were refunded, even though you've only asked for CNS-BNE on JQ to be cancelled and flew BNE-CNS on QF?

Yeah, I guess that makes sense.
Shut up it is.
I'll call it compensation for lack of sleep then.
It makes my return Qantas flight about the same price as the Jetstar flight was then, so nobody is seriously out of pocket...but Virgin got a fare over Qantas group.

Virgin was OK, been years since I have been on them as well.
Actually pretty sure it must have been my non flight Jetstar crew taking up half of Business Class on the same plane down to BNE.
