Jetstar cheap flights - How to Book

Welcome to AFF!

There’s no absolute hard and fast rule for getting the cheapest flights. As a general rule, however, booking months before the flight will normally get you cheaper prices than booking days or weeks before the flight. So planning ahead, and a willingness to be a little flexible, is a pretty good formula for getting the cheapest flights possible.

The first step is to monitor Jetstar’s prices on the routes you want to fly. Have a look at what they cost if you book 11 months ahead, or 6 months ahead, or 3 months ahead, or 3 weeks ahead. That will give you a very good idea of the “normal” price of those flights. Be aware that flights will generally cost more during school holidays.

Once you have a good idea of what the flights would normally cost, be on the lookout for sales and/or promotions (I assume you can sign up to receive notifications of these from Jetstar). Then when those promotions (such as the Friday sales mentioned by @AIRwin above) come along, and if the prices are cheaper than the “normal” cost of the flights, that’s the time to grab them.

I generally fly Virgin but over the years I’ve saved many thousands of dollars by following that strategy of booking many months before my flights, during sales and promotions. I’m sure Jetstar is the same.

Jetstar do have a Friday Fare Frenzy 12:00pm - 8:00pm AEST. Not sure it occurs every Friday.
They also have a Price Beat Guarantee - Find a lower comparable fare online and they’ll beat it by 10%. Check out their website.
And a warm welcome to AFF.

@Aviation:) My first suggestion would be become a Jetstar member. Not sure current subscription but last time I paid it was $55. This gives you annual membership.

As a member you get first dibs at any special price and gives you discount on every ticket purchase even if not on special, plus some of the addons like luggage, seat selection etc.

As an example last year they ran a special of buy a fairly cheap ticket one way to Japan and the return flight is free. The catch is the special is for limited seats for certain date combos, but as a Jetstar member I received an email 48hrs before the general public and consequently had a wide range of options to choose from. The general public got just the leftovers after the members had grabbed the combinations they wanted.

Another example was a limited special of $26 one way BNE-MEL or MEL-BNE. I grabbed 2 seats each way in the 48hr heads up period on the dates I wanted for $52 each for my partner and I plus my bag addon was discounted. A friend who is not a member didn’t get the email to 48hrs later and complained couldn't find any seats left on multiple dates.

If you normally travel as a couple or family, you only need one membership and as long as you are all one the one booking and on the same sectors each of you gets any discounts applicable.
