Hi im a long time 'lurker' 1st time poster,
I was thinking of heading to Koh Samui some time in the near future & have been trying to weigh up my options. Ive looked at quite a few threads on *class but couldnt find much on Thai Y.
Would you recommend doing the *class from SYD-HKT then getting bangkok airways to USM or Thai Y class SYD-BKK-USM.
Your help will be much appreciated, thankyou :D

Both carriers will provide food and drink at no charge - Thai will likely have a better alcohol selection and nicer food than JQ.

JQ seat be wider and will have more pitch and recline and the cabin will have a lot fewer people than TG.

TG IFE will be superior to the digiboxes that JQ provide with more content.

Without any hesitation, I would recommend taking the *class product ahead of the Y product. Although I guess it also depends on price difference. If you're a WP you can have F lounge access. Otherwise, I think *class will let you have business lounge access (but not sure about that) - I was WP the one time I flew *class.

Looks like I hav a few things I have to consider. It seems hard though haha.
Btw I'm not a wp member but any lounge access as opposed to no lounge access is a bonus

StarClass will get you lounge access prior to the flight in the J lounge.

I would certainly fly Starclass over Y on any airline.

You might also want to look at SYD-MEL-BKK with JQ, and if you are not WP or even SG, such a route would get you 320 SCs round trip which is a good amount in the right direction if you *class it for all the legs (the aircraft positions from SYD to MEL for the flight.

First question is, what is the price difference between Star Class vs. Thai Y ?

Then assuming a non-sale Star Class to SYD-HKT rtn is in the vincinity of $1800 vs. TG which will be in the low $1,000, and that QF status is not important. I would choose to save the $$$ and fly Y.

Good point. If money is important then the $ saving is significant.

Did a quick status run MEL-BKK-MEL last Thursday and returned on Sunday night in Star*.

Had a sale fare for about $1,000 and reckon it was well worth it. Trip over was highlighted by lots of food and I watched a heap of stuff on my computer.

Return trip (overnight) I slept most of the way and was quite refreshed upon my return.

Now I just need the SCs to credit and I will be a WP.

As a compromise also - business on TG could be had for around $1500 return by buying US Airways miles (assuming you have an existing US miles account).

And assuming there is availability for redemptions, which will be decreasing thanks to such offers.

True - I'm still seeing availability in J for TG a week before Xmas though! I think it's more likely that the other Star Carriers have restricted their award availability because of these promos.

JQ 27 SYD-HKT would require you to overnight in coughet as there wont be any connecting flights to USM that late at night.

I've flown JQ Star class MEL-BKK-MEL and enjoyed it immensely. Food is good, seats are great (compared with anyone's Y class seat), wines aren't bad (and are limitless) and the entertainment isn't too bad either. I'm also a lifetime Star Alliance Gold member, and have flown TG Y class many times. It's OK for Y class but doesn't begin to compare with JQ *class.

Also, apart from the fare difference (which doesn't seem to be an issue), you will probably find that the TG fare doesn't give any or many FF miles, whereas the JQ * class fares will help you get to QF Gold in a jiffy.

You may not be concerned about this, but IMHO, you should be...

Yes TG always seemed to have good availability from AU to Asia in Xmas time, compare to other *A carriers. I have *A J award on TG SYD-BKK-HKG and back during this Xmas and New Year period. Excellent deal I say.

But then again, for a bit more money buying US miles you can even do TG F.

just came back from BKK *class, Neil Perry business class food, good wine, free entertainment, priority boarding and lanes thru customs, Qantas Lounge access prior to flight - if you watch they come on sale fairly regularly, I booked the BKK and Bali * class flights in Aug for Oct this year and Mar next year in the same 50% off sale, great deal. Thai Y is ok, but like comparing apples and oranges, if cost is the comparision then the Y fare will always be cheaper, but grabbing a *class flight on sale is almost the same price as the other main carriers. You can fly to coughet from SYD and BKK from Melb, then reposition yourself where you want to go.
