A few weeks ago I flew on a different flight than normal - QF613. I was surprised to see that this was also a code share with Jetstar as JQ6613. I was aware of QF code shares on JQ flights. But this was the first time I noticed a JQ code share on QF. Is this new?

First I thought it might have been to provide a connection to international Jetstar flights. But there are two Jetstar flights that are close to this flight. Looking into it the only flights on the route that were Jetstar code shares actually are quite close to actual 2 of the 3 Jetstar flights on that route.

The only reason thing I could think of is that it might be used as overflow if the Jetstar flights are overbooked. Maybe if the Jetstar flights are canceled it makes it easier to move passengers across. They don't seem to come up in Jetstars website.

These generally do link up with JQi flights.

E.g. JQ29 to BKK for JQ6613 & JQ6615

+1 to this - those codes can only be booked in conjunction with a JQi flight, not as stand-alone. Similar to the QF coded flights on BA from LHR into Europe - it has to be < 24hrs connection.
