I could be completely incorrect but it seems the Jetstar website may be revealing the amount they get paid by Qantas for an award seat.

I was just searching for some domestic Jetstar award flights and similar to any other redemptions when you reach the payment stage (but before you make payment) the Qantas website actually creates a PNR both for the QF website but also the JQ website.

You can find this Jetstar booking reference by heading to Qantas manage bookings, selecting the booking in question, and then clicking on the flight which reveals the blue box at the bottom containing the Jetstar reference:

Taking that JQ reference it's possible to view the booking on the Jetstar website before payment however at the top it had the following message:Screen Shot 2021-05-14 at 4.05.06 pm.png

Clicking on pay now gives the following amounts with the taxes matching the QF website (except for the added GST on the QF website). So is this base fare of $54.40 the actual cost that QF is paying JQ for an award seat or is it some other random figure?

I don't have enough points to search anything longer than 600 miles but it seems that all Australian domestic routes have a base fare of $54.40 and New Zealand flights NZ$56.70 for a flight under 600 miles which is 6400 points. Also worth noting is that if you've got multiple legs eg. CHC-WLG-AKL which all fall within the 600 miles, the base fare of NZ$56.70 seems to appear twice (once for each flight).

Dunno but seems high. Cash fares purchased well enough in advance are usually less than this for the JQ domestic flights in NZ.
