I've usually done it in writing. Either snail mail or email, so that I have a record.

I have a default letter:

'In reference to account number xx_xx_xx_xx_xx_xx_xx_XX



Dear Sir/Madam,

I write to direct that you cancel all of my credit card accounts with your organisation immediately.

I will not be liable for any further transactions from 14 days of this letter.

You should provide a final statement within 14 days of this letter.




Yours sincerely,'

Depends if you really want to cancel or want them to make an offer (reduce/remove annual fee, balance transfer offer or some points). If the first then cancel by letter, otherwise you need to go via the pain of phoning.

Wrote them a email, they called back 2 days later and didn't get hold of me. What impressed me was they sent a email saying we cant get hold of me and then called back about and hour later.

Offered me 5K to keep card open which i declined
