For those not interested in Web UI / UX / HCI / communications, no one was scammed or hurt due to this error. Please resume reading another thread.
If anyone is subscribed to Jetstar and receive their weekly Friday Frenzy emails, I don't know whether you noticed that this week (perhaps has happened before) that they have a "booking form" built into the email. A snippet is below:
Pretty neat, right? You can search for flights straight from the email (i.e. punch in the details, and another tab/window will show you the results right away). That's cool, right?
Wrong.
The booking form is not really a web form. It's an image. Click on any part of it, and it takes you to the regular Jetstar sales page. The drop-down lists, the radio buttons - all static. It does nothing - just takes you to another generic page.
This is really, really dumb. Why put that element in there if it's not intended to be used as one would understand it to be used. That kind of technique is usually reserved for (low quality) phishing emails. Someone at Jetstar communications needs a dead right kick up the backside, or subjected to one week of being strapped to a Jetstar aircraft...on the wing no less.
I hope this isn't a browser, OS or mail client specific thing. I'm using Firefox, received the email in Gmail and running Windows 7. I checked the source of the message, however, and it seems it really is just a stupid image.
Oh, and Jetstar, what does it mean if I click on the option, "I just want the cheape"? I'm not familiar with the adjective, cheape....
Really dumb, Jetstar. Really, really, really dumb.
And now the customary sign-off..... Rant over.
