Flew GK21 NRT - HKG the other day. Apart from the OMG departure time at NRT (840am!!), was a very pleasant flight with the usual courteous japanese service. however noted a few "weird" processes that were atypical of any flights i had ever taken... perhaps these things were written into GK's SOP manual and being japanese, every process was followed down to the letter :)

Checkin:
- checked every person's passport for a HKG visa or onward travel proof. added many minutes per pax to the checkin process as they had to flip - through the passport to find each person's visa (in my case was a work visa) and physically record the details.
one bag per person seemed to be enforced strictly (this is positive)

Onboard:
- safety announcements only in japanese (does this comply with iata requirements on an international flight?). said in english if pax had questions about the safety demo, should ask the staff lol...
- insisted on seatbelts to be fastened when seated (even when seatbelt sign was not on). FA's would go through the cabin policing this. ( very annoying)

Given the flight was going to HK then yes, demo should have been in English as well.

Can't imagine why anyone would sit on an aeroplane without a seatbelt on

Re the latter, I always fasten my seatbelt when seated. However, sometimes needs to be off for mobility if I need to tend to my daughter... as my daughter likes to climb in and out of her seat

Why not Chinese?

'Cos they want to see what it's like to be flicked to the roof, and then impact the floor/seats/others at 2G.
