Hi all,

I am flying Jetstar from MEL to HKG via SIN. However our flight arrives at SIN in the afternoon (16:50, JQ7) and departs for HKG the following morning (10:50, 3K697).

1. Having never been to Singapore before, is it worth staying at a hotel in the city overnight for such a short layover?
2. Will our checked bagged be through-checked from MEL to HKG (even for an 18 hour transit), or do we need to collect and re-check in SIN?

I tried calling Jetstar who said it would be through-checked, but they weren't terribly confident and have done extensive searching here and Google but haven't been able to find the answers.

Thanks,
Phil.

Welcome to AFF.

Is your trip all on the one booking or different tickets?

If on one trip your luggage might be booked all the way through. But why not collect it, take the train to the city (about 30 minutes and SIN$2 plus cents) and enjoy a little bit of SIN?

If booked as two different trips then you'll have to collect it regardless.

It is a very easy town to travel around and very safe so no problems with catching the local train.

Would have to agree a visit into the city would be a very good idea.

Check in to a hotel and go out and grab some dinner and have a look around.

Definitely worth the trip into town. Perhaps try some chilli crabs while you are there. :)

For just an overnighter, you could probably just cary a change of basic clothes in your carry on and not have to lug the suitcases around if you didn't need to...

But can't confirm for you whether they will hold them for you... The trip into the city is probably worth it if you haven't been there before...

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice. I think we will stay in the city and bring a change of clothes in hand luggage in case our luggage is through-checked to HK.

Cheers,
Phil.

And may I recommend the Hilton on Orchard Rd. It's very central and extremely comfortable, although it can be a little pricey.

It is possible to not collect the luggage and let it go through to left luggage and collect it later.

I have done this a few times while I have been in transit but I am not too sure if there is some rule against it if you leave the airport.

I've flown this trip before, booked on the one itinerary. The only difference was that my flight to HKG left at 0640 the next morning (3K691). My luggage was through-checked all the way from MEL to HKG. I didn't bother leaving the airport and just overnighted at Changi. I received my MEL-SIN boarding pass only at MEL, and since I didn't leave the airport, I collected my boarding pass for SIN-HKG at the departure gate around 1hr before departure.

I'm doing the same again later in the year, and this time around am planning to make a quick trip into the city for some hawker food, before dashing back to the airport again before the last train leaves.

Great that the luggage was through-checked. Jetstar have already changed our flights twice... wouldn't surprise me if it used to be 06:40 :)

I've booked a night at Naumi based on TripAdvisor reviews, it's apparently in a good touristy district. Hopefully this will provide us with the opportunity to see a bit of SIN!

Now that I have taken the flights I can provide some definitive answers to my original question.
- If you plan to leave the airport and come back, Jetstar will not through-check luggage and you need to check-in again when you return to the airport
- If you are not leaving the airport, Jetstar will through-check luggage and issue boarding passes international/Asia segments

Hope this helps anyone who is thinking of doing the same.
