Hi all,

I booked a cheap ticket to Thailand on Jetstar for just $440 return. Some time after my mate wanted to come along and I subsequently booked a ticket for him. I was able to book the same flights and paid the extra for seat selection so we could sit together.
Anyway, he can no longer travel, and since it was a cheap ticket, no refund is available for him. Thats ok, **** happens and he'll take the hit.
On to my question. We have booked on separate PNR's he will be a no show on the Mel-Bkk leg. This is good for me since I will now have 2 seats for myself.
Will the same apply on the Bkk-Mel return since he didn't fly the outward portion of the trip? What are the chances of his seat remaining vacant for me?
I ask because in the past I have paid the extra to upgrade to Star Class, but if I will have 2 seats in economy it seems like a waste of money.

Cheers.

Once he misses the outbound leg they'll probably cancel the return leg and return the seat for others to choose.

If it is a desirable seat probably no chance of it remaining vacant, especially if it is a full flight.

Based on a previous recent post, Jetstar don't sell return tickets - only one-way fares. So, you would have got two one-way tickets (MEL - BKK and BKK - MEL). This means that if your mate does not travel the first leg, the remaining legs won't be cancelled by the airline.

Whether you get an empty seat or not, I don't know... maybe Jetstar might re-sell the seat to someone else in the last minute after they determine that your mate is not going to show.

Or the flight might be overbooked, in which case, the seat would be assigned to someone else.

maybe worth a ph call to Dstar and see if they can give you a comfort seat.

can your mate could check-in on line - and then cancel say 15 mins prior to departure (so they're not looking for him). That might keep your spare seat. Or is on-line check-in not available for JQi?

Actually, I just thought of that too.
I have is PNR details since I booked the ticket.
In Bkk I could attempt to check in online and that would give me some indication of whether the ticket is still valid I guess.

I don't believe you can do OLCI for JQi flights so if your friend hasn't checked in when they close the flight 1 hour prior to departure any spare seats could then be assigned to staff standby pax or maybe another pax that doesn't want a middle seat & gets moved to the now vacant aisle or window seat your friend was in.
