Jetstar and dirty price matching tricks out of MEL

Rang JetStar, advising then a DJ flight at 6.15 am on Sunday out of Melbourne to SYD was a whole $44 cheaper.

Phone operator then said double the difference does NOT apply, as AVALON is not the same as Tulla, and therefore, not the same route, and double the difference does not apply.

Is this right??

Anyway, I hope they choke on it. 6am=5am at airport=4am depart from SE Suburbs= 3 am wake up, for $169! (That was $89 on Thurs night). They are dreaming. I would love to know their loading factors for such early flights, because with their wicked gate close tricks and luggage stings, they have been soooo successful at turning people away.

My understanding of their rules is it has to be the same airport pair, so the phone operator would be right. That is why it is such a useless guarantee for us in the west.

It's pretty useless anyway. In the example given there, you'd have to pay $44 more for the "pleasure" of flying JQ, and for your trouble you'd get an $88 voucher. Realistically, its only worth $44 because you've already paid that much to JQ anyway... and $44 isn't enough to get me to fly JQ!

Their antics remind of the easyjet tv show Airline. Checkin closed thats it... understandable in the UK at those busy airports.... but to have the same strict process at Avalon.. give me a break.

Our experience was with me taking friends to Avalon. I misjudged the distance to the airport, arrived for the last MEL-SYD flight of the day. We arrived no more than 5 minutes after checkin was closed, px were still boarding, and it was still 15-20 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

They were forced to re buy tickets for the morning, and get accommodation at a cheap nearby hotel. Two px, no luggage - they were just down for the day....

I had plenty of reasons to not fly j* before but that took the prize. I do not make a habit of being late for my flights (if I am late, I am REALLY late) but DJ and Q are not as stringent and for the sake of a few minutes, if they can get you on the flight they will.

We should be thankful, that they didn't stick strictly to the Ryanair version of the guarantee... Where you have to make a booking, then email in about the competitor's price... And Ryanair will only check the competitor's price during normal business hours! (Needless to say, I don't think Ryanair pays out much either.) In this situation, you wouldn't have known AVV was actually considered Geelong by Jetstar, despite all their advertising, until after you got a post-purchase email back.

Sometimes I see the same people staffing the check-in counter, at the gate, handling boarding...so that may effect the 30 minute check-in rule, if staff are multi-tasking. (To those who haven't flown JQ, you join a specific "Flight" check-in line, rather than a general "all flights" queue.)

Yes they tend to, although QF are very strict with the 30min rule if you have luggage (DJ aren't though). However without luggage (as in your example) with both DJ & QF web check in it makes life so much easier that one doesn't need to worry about check in deadlines, just gate closing deadlines. So your pax would have easily made the flight under a web check in scenario. Web check in must be too expensive for the JQ LCC model:confused:

I believe JQ are planning to have Web/Kiosk check-in come online with their FFP.

Check-in has noting to do with cost. Making checkin efficient would loose them money. Indeed, 1st class pay more, to avoid bad service, and lines of sheeples.

Normally, checkin is used to figure how much freight can be loaded, or how little fuel can be pumped. However Australia has outrageous safety margins, plus the need to make people airport hostages, so the overpriced concessions can gourge a little bit more.

For many, it is an outrageous scam so that they can overbook the flights (a lot), knowing they can resell the same seats over, for stupid, tardy, disorganised vic, er passengers, and possibly negative advertising so that people go back to QF, swearing off dodegy LCC after an expensive sting, er lesson.

Checkin can be made easy, such as Malaysia's rail check-in, or from certain 1st class hotels.

The trick is manyfold, - do not piss off a critical mass, and have a large market of stupid people who believe in bargains. Jetstar may be failing on this, the higher dollar is drying up inbounds, and word of mouth has 40% of my contacts saying 'never'.- plus a website that melts to punish persistance and skinflints, thus limiting promotional costs.

Finally , offer flights in 'bad' timeslots to steer passengers for an extra $20 or so, so go for higher priced slots.

The threat is another Carrier that has the 'can do' attitude of old Virgin. The round of discounting proves that Tiger may rock the boat, and hurt share prices of the incumberants, and worst case, bought out like Impulse.

Hmm sorry I find the opposite - I find QF excellent dealing with me when I am late which is almost always! - have never been charged for excess either with them, Virgin are a little tougher (have been fined a couple of times :() and have never been late / overweight on Jet* yet...
