How does JQ compare with TG?

I just took advantage of a TG sale that ran during May. Flew MEL-HKT (via BKK) with open jaw returning from BKK. Total cost $780 (and I also netted $95 Air NZ Airbucks). Had good choice of schedule as well. At the time Jetstar was $860 for MEL-BKK return (didn't check the HKT pricing), schedule didn't work for me, and would have been slugged $94 for meal/comfort/entertainment and $8 CC fee. No brainer really.

Even in the recent sale $598 return (+$94 + $8 ), I'd still take TG at $780. Also the 34" seat pitch on TG's new 772 looked attractive (although I didn't experience as was allocated exit row in both dirns).

One thing though, I suspect JQ appeals to a certain market segment who are not all that comfortable in taking a flight on foreign carriers. Which is fine by me, as it has stimulated the full service carriers such as TG to be more reasonably priced.

What dajop says there is very accurate, and I'd have to agree. I think a lot of the JQ market is the uneducated and inexperienced Australian traveller. The type of person who would say "I'll only fly Qantas because they're the worlds safest airline". A percentage of people would see the Jetstar fare and just think "well it's Jetstar, it must be the cheapest" and not look at or book any of the far superior foreign carriers at a lower fare.

These people do exist, I have a friend that won't even fly NZ...

I completely agree Daniel. Similarly, I had a very gullable mate who mentioned to me on the weekend they were going to book Jetstar to fly to coughet. I asked him if he had compared prices with the other airlines to which he reponded that he just assumed they would be the cheapest, and if not, the lowest price guarantee would work. He didn't realise this was only domestic and genuinely thought that Jetstar being a LCC would be the cheapest. :shock:

It seems to be a general consensus but some are learning the hard way.

I respectfully disagree.

• The prices to SEAsia are horrendous ($349 return would seem reasonable to me*)
• The price to the USA is too much ($500 return to Hawaii is acceptable*)
• The price to Japan is getting better (just like Hawaii, $500 return is the magic figure*)

* prices quoted are the final paid prices, including all +++’s and removing all extra discounts. And JQi has certainly hit those sorts of figures in the past! Note that HKT, isn't in the sales anymore, these days :-(

Now, how about some StarClass specials Jetstar?! (With a 12 month travel period, to boot... I will not be yield managed! :shock: )

As a lead-in, limited availability, non-sale time price, $700 is OK... but to try and palm it off as a "sale", that's just disrespectful.

(Although, we are really talking about $608. But in my mind, I tend to add an extra $100 return, on top of this, for some "in-flight amenity" on JQi...so back to $708.)

LOL, Indeed! ... but lamenting "I will not be yield managed as much as QAN management wants to!" doesn't have quite the same ring about it?!

Although the irony of then continuing on to post about - "lead-in, limited availability, non-sale time prices..." would probably not have eluded you either.

In fact, when I posted originally, I pictured someone from JQi sitting there and laughing at little ol' me! (But I doubt a post on AFF would be seen by them, let alone have any impact in their office.)
