I have travelled through Joburg Int'l 6 times in the last 4 months and each time my luggage has not arrived at the destination. For example if flying Syd-Joburg-anywhere, the luggage goes into a bit of a black hole if in a transit situation. Other than booking your bags only thru to Joburg and then re-checking them after you exit immigration customs etc, is there anyway of improving my chances of having my luggage arrive with me at my final destination?

Please note that connection times at Joburg were always about 3 hours. My bags were always found and delivered to me between 1 and 3 days later. 4 flights were with Qantas/SAA, and the other 2 with Emirates/Qantas

Frustrating.

Don't know how much luggage you have/need but an idea is to carry on board with you.

On a couple of international trips I have managed to fit my clothes and other essentials into a couple of bags suitable for carry on. Total weight around 12-14 kilos so within limits. This way they are with me at all times and do not have to wait to collect them.

Thats what I aim to do if I know will be travelling through airports that are bad for losing luggage or bags misconnecting. Sometimes its hard to do.
