I've been a bit of a lurker on this forum for a while, but thought I'd register to ask a question (which has probably been asked previously, but I can't find the specific answers I need).

I'm in the UK, and have a couple of long haul holidays/trips over the next 12 months or so. As I'll only be in economy, my intention is to join the Qantas club in order to get lounge access etc. The specific questions I have are:
  1. If I become an AFF gold member, I believe I would get A$200 off the first year's fee (which would make the cost just about palatable). Is this offer open to UK citizens too? If so, is this something that I arrange through AFF or through Qantas?
  2. I will travelling with my girlfriend, but as I can always take a guest I will only need one membership for us both to have lounge access?
  3. We are flying to HK via T5. Will we both get access to the T5 lounges?
  4. As a Qantas club member I would get priority check-in, but would my girlfriend, or would she be required to wait in the long queues? Can't see that one going down too well!
Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There is no prolem with being in the UK and using the AFF scheme to join; being in the UK just means that it is 9% cheaper to join (no GST). When you take out gold membership , you just download the corporate membership form, fill it in and get it to this site's admin

Your guest can indeed enter the lounges with you, so you need only 1 membership

Travelling from LHR T5, you can indeed both access the lounges there

Priority check in with Qantas , you again should have no issues taking the guest with you through check in

Relatively new to AFF. Can someone please explain what an AFF gold membership is, how it is obtained, and what it costs.

There is one small problem. I was told that a member from NZ tried to sign up to the scheme as a non-Australian resident and Qantas disallowed it. So you need to sign up as an Australian, with a postal address elsewhere is fine I presume, you don't get that small saving from not being an Australian resident.

But check with admin for more details of that issue.

2. Yes, you're fine.
3. Yes, you're fine.
4. Helps to be on the same itinerary, but otherwise you should be fine.

Welcome to AFF travelbug73! I assume all your flights will be on either BA, QF or AA? Note that other oneworld airlines e.g. Cathay Pacific won't allow you access to their lounge.

Am I missing something? The post re gold membership privileges is empty? Can anybody confirm it is still possible to get the Qantas Club corporate rates through AFF? If so what is the process for signing up to Qantas Club once I become a Golf AFF member.

Thanks.
Baz

Thanks Flashware! Yes, all our flights are booked with QF or BA. I'd considered Priorty Pass, but they don't seem to have lounges at LHR T5, Cairns or Sydney Int, all of which we are passing through. Also, without the speedy check-in we might not have much time for the lounges!

Our next travel isn't until December, so will hold off on joining Qantas Club for a little while. Do you have any idea how long the pocess takes via AFF?

Excellent, membership with QP is your best option. I'd allow at least 2 weeks just to be sure.

When I joined through AFF, I joined just a few days before I had a flight so I called Qantas to "enquire" as to whether or not it would be done (knowing full well that it wouldn't be) and they very kindly put a temp membership on my account so that it printed on my boarding pass.

That said, as you're travelling internationally, I wouldn't want to chance it without the card.

It's extremely quick! I posted my form via Express Post to Admin on a Thursday, he received it on Friday and completed the details. He then posted it to Qantas on Sunday and by 1PM on Monday I logged into my QFF account online and Qantas Club was already active! very quick on admin's part and Qantas's part. :)

I haven't recieved my membership kit yet, however Qantas club already prints on my boarding passes.

Thanks- good to know theings move quickly. Being in the UK, I'll obviously need to give myself a bit more time.

Do you know if Admin need an original form, or would a scanned copy suffice, as this would obviously speed things up considerably.

The fastest way to receive an answer from Admin is to send a Private Message to his account, which happens to be called "Admin". Click on the UserCP (User Control Panel) on the blue&white options bar towards the top of the page, then scroll down to the Private Message options and follow your nose.
