April 24 I made a booking for myself and a friend with JQ for SIN - DPS on their mid afternoon flight May 19

We received the following email on the 15th May

Due to runway maintenance works at Perth Airport, we have needed to alter our flight schedule between Perth and Denpasar for travel dates between 17 May-14 and 13 June-14. This has also impacted some flights departing Singapore that connect on to Perth from Denpasar. As a result, please be advised that your flight details have changed.

We understand it can be frustrating when plans change, and we apologise for any inconvenience that you may experience. Whilst we try to avoid any changes to our timetable, in this instance the circumstances causing the changes are outside our control. Please review your updated flight details below:

I'm trying to work out if JQ knew about the runway works but decided to continue selling the flight cheaply then push the passengers onto their other flights? They were significantly cheaper than Air Asia and Tiger. I just find it unlikely that Perth Airport wouldn't give more than 3 weeks notice to airlines about planned maintenance. I'm suspecting the flight was so poorly booked they just cancelled it.

Not sure what your point is here but for me I would look at what times they are currently selling the flight for. If it's the new time then all OK. If it's the old time the bait and switch comes to mind.

Well, I find it hard to believe that perth Airport would decide to undertake maintenance and provide less than a month notice to the airlines.

My understanding is there was runway maintenance done in march and the work being done in may / june was a follow up to that.

It just feels like JQ were bait and switching customers because they should have known the impact of the runway works in Perth long before they cancelled the flight.

I think what straitman was alluding to was that we need the OP to provide the original JQ flight numbers, dates, and times and the new different flight numbers & times and dates. Then we can tell if its a bait and switch situation or just incompetence.

Already had the holiday. Just was annoyed that we went from being able to enjoy the first night in Bali to get to our accommodation at 2am.

Booking was originally made for JQ117 Leaving Sin at 1835 and Arriving at 2115. Less than 3 weeks later JQ decided to cancel the flight due to "unforseen" runway works at Perth airport, so our options was to travel a day earlier on the 2135 flight (not possible) or at 2135 on the same day or a day later.

So either JQ somehow lost track of the scheduled works at Perth, or they decided they'd bait passengers into choosing the early night flight knowing they'd push them onto other flights in the not too distant future.

This one went in my favour!!!

I have a friend from Bali staying with me and she wanted to extend her trip by 2 weeks.

I had already agreed to a schedule change to the earlier flight at 9:30am (original flight was 1:30pm) and that flight was scrapped due to the 'runway' works.

Thanks to the info on here I called up about 3 days later and quotes the significant timetable change rule and got my money refunded.

I then booked a flight 2 weeks later using the price match of $139 against air asia and paid even less!

So thanks to the 'runway works' I saved about $40 off the original booking and also didn't need to pay their $115 that they were quoting me to change the original flight.

Win win here :))

I think what Auckland10 just demonstrated is that if JQ was being sneaky, it just backfired ... at least a little.

It was a brilliant way of getting out of the extra charges :)

Love how as soon as I quoted the significant change clause and that a refund could be given I was told I would see the money within 7 days. 2 days later the paypal money came back in refunded (as that's how I originally paid) :)
