Hi,

I just have a few quick questions about checking in for a JQ flight at the Qantas Club so here goes:

1) Do you get to choose the seat you want to sit in or do you just get what you are given?

2) When you get your BP, do you get a shopping receipt BP or a cardboard QF one (Thats just personal choice, I hate the receipt style ones:lol:)

3) I have to present at the Qantas Club for check in at least 40 minutes before departure, corrrect?

Thanks in advance:cool:

Regarding point 3:

Note: Lounge check-in for Jetstar is 40 minutes before departure. If you arrive within 40 minutes of scheduled departure, go directly to the Jetstar check-in counter. You need to check-in for Jetstar flights at least 30 minutes before scheduled departure otherwise your ticket will be forfeited. No refund or free transfer is available. You will be required to book and pay for a new ticket if you wish to travel.

I would assume if the staff in the QP are checking you in you’d get a cardboard boarding pass, but never tried, and I’m not sure about selecting seats, but I thought you could do this online? Though maybe I’m thinking of OLCI.

AFAIAA you cannot check in for JQ at the QP, unless you can somehow get access and OLCI. Generally, you have to show a JQ BP AND your QP card, to get the "please come in" through clenched teeth. IME the dragons regard JQ pax as well beyond the pale!

Having said that the QP gang at T3 in SYD have gone above and beyond to help me out when flying JQ.

To get a boarding CARD you need to go to the Service Desk - at least at OOL.

There are two scenarios when travelling on JQ when making the booking:

Scenario One
Booking thru the QF website & receiving a QF itinerary with QF booking reference number when flights are either QF codeshare flights eg QF5082 DRW/BNE or an outright JQ number eg JQ82 DRW/BNE. The Amadeus booking reference cannot be used to OLCI on the JQ website.*

Scenario Two
Booking through the JQ website & receiving a JQ itinerary with JQ booking reference number when flights are outright JQ number eg JQ82 DRW/BNE (not sure if you can book JQ codeshares on QF metal?). The booking ref you receive here is what you use to OLCI on JQ website.

I think a major issue with QF/JQ is even though they are separate airlines everybody knows that they are both in the Qantas Group so assume that it's "all the same thing" and that you can check in at QF for a JQ flight.

It doesn't help matters when at some Australian airports QF have the contract to do JQ check in and therefore the ability to access to the JQ system (Navitaire). If QF don't have the contract their staff will not have JQ sign ons for the JQ system nor legally would they have the right to access a JQ booking. QF use an entirely different checkin system (Altea) which cannot access JQ bookings irrespective of whether the booking is made via JQ or QF website. Bottom line JQ metal = JQ checkin.

This is understandably confusing for pax when they go to another city where a different ground handler does JQ checkin (eg DRW it's Skystar Ground Handling) & pax go to either QF checkin or the QP & rightly assume that they should be able to be checked in by QF.

1) Do you get to choose the seat you want to sit in or do you just get what you are given?

I would go online or call up JQ res quoting your JQ booking ref asap after making the booking & choose your seat so when you OLCI or use a kiosk at the airport that's the seat you will be given. AFAIK if using kiosks at the airport it just spits out a boarding pass ie there is no ability to view a seat map & make your selection from there. If you have not preallocated a seat already expect a middle seat.

2) When you get your BP, do you get a shopping receipt BP or a cardboard QF one (Thats just personal choice, I hate the receipt style ones:lol:)

That would depend on what airport you checked in at - different airports seem to have different boarding pass stock. Obviously if you OLCI you'll have an A4 sheet of paper which is your boarding pass. The kiosks have a thin oblong piece of paper then JQ checkin have the traditional cardboard boarding passes. I haven't seen the shopper docket style boarding passes like DJ have but it's not to say they are not used elsewhere in Australia.

3) I have to present at the Qantas Club for check in at least 40 minutes before departure, corrrect?

Honestly I would ditch the idea altogether of trying to get a JQ boarding pass from the QP! I think it's easier to do OLCI on the JQ website & print out your boarding pass so all you need to do is drop your bag off at the JQ bag drop counter then proceed to the QP. If you only have carry on then do OLCI & proceed directly to QP after arriving at airport.

* To obtain your JQ booking reference (if booked via QF website) ring QF reservations & quote your Amadeus booking reference and ask QF to give you JQ booking reference. It should appear in your QF booking somewhere & will say "JQ confo number". This is the booking ref you need to use on JQ website for OLCI.

1. Dunno

2) In the QP you still get the "shopper docket" BP.

3) 40 Minutes at the latest; ¾ hour out they won't even let you in!

You can preselect your seat with JQ for a fee. If you don't preselect from my experience when you either OLCI or checkin at the airport you are just allocated a seat and there is not a lot of choice given.

Lounge checkin below:

Note: Lounge check-in for Jetstar is 40 minutes before departure. If you arrive within 40 minutes of scheduled departure, go directly to the Jetstar check-in counter. You need to check-in for Jetstar flights at least 30 minutes before scheduled departure otherwise your ticket will be forfeited. No refund or free transfer is available. 1) to preselect before check-in (assuming a cheapo fare rather than jetflex), you will need to pay from $3 for basic seat selection, up to a larger amount for more choice seats & longer flights.

At around T-48 (before web check-in opens) the JQ system will allocate seats to everyone who has not already preselected, when you log in to web check-in you will have an automatically allocated seat. note: they do try to keep people on the same PNR seated together. During web check-in, you will be able to change this selection to most available seats (including some empty choice seats which have not been sold/preselected).

At nearly all QPs* you can also change your seat allocation, should you desire to do so / any are available. (Some QPs will not change you to a choice seat though.)

2) depends on the Qantas Club where you check-in, some issue card BPs (even on QF stock sometimes) but others do have the JQ docket style printers at their desks.

*note: there are a very few QPs that don't offer JQ check-in, e.g. Darwin, Sydney T3 & Perth (last time I checked)

3) officially 40minutes, but in reality any time until JQ closes its system (approx 30mins before departure)

I know MEL and ADL QC have the ability to check you in for flight and change your seat. Most of the time the agents are not skilled enough to do the change seat or have forgotton how to or can't be bothered and you find they will just ring up the airport JQ service desk to get them to do it then print the boarding pass on the receipt style paper.

If you have a QF booking for a JQ flight you can logon to checkmytrip.com and view this booking. Somewhere on the screen (I think under notes) it will have other airline confirmation code (or something to that extent). You can then use this PNR to OLCI at jetstar 48hrs out and select your seat and then even change again at QP.

I have only ever been given cardboard style BP's from JQ physical desks.

Why not just check in online, save the hassle and enjoy the QP?
