I was looking at some redemptions SIN-MEL and MEL-SIN. And noticed a new overnight departure from MEL to SIN, departing at 23:55 (QF235, a codeshare on JQ). NOT! It is JQ217/QF235 that departs MEL 23:55, arrives SIN at 17:30. Via AKL. Wonder what the record for the most indirect "direct" flight (using airline definition of direct) is? I also wonder if anyone has fallen for booking this yet? JQ can do what they like, but putting a single QF code to this flight, really?

I didn't believe you at first. But sure enough if it real. JQ217 bookable on Jetstar's website. A320 for the first leg then switch to a A330. Good way to turn a 8 hour trip into 19 hour trip.

Even if no one has fallen for it yet it won't be too long before someone does & will be hit with a double whammy when they turn up at QF to checkin & are told firstly that they're on JQ so will need to checkin at JQ then secondly find out they're also going via AKL!

There will be people doing it as JQ will make the price pretty good.

But gee it would a very long 12 hour flight on JQ

With the extra long transfer time, as least you know you won't have to rush from gate to gate.

Actually the return is even better ;). It departs SIN at 18:50 arrives AKL at 08:50, then leaves AKL again at 21:00 arriving in MEL at 23:05 some 26 hrs later. The only upside is you get a day in Auckland, and it still only costs 30,000 pts ....

I can see some positives in the return leg.

A long lunch somewhere and then head home.

It's not as bad as MAL-SIN via AKL, but the first time I flew CX104 ADL-HKG I got a bit of a surprise when I found out it was via MEL.....

One flight number with 2 different aircraft? Why is Qantas selling a codeshare version on their website?
