Having a slight case of buyer's remorse. Just booked 2 x J MEL/LHR redemptions on A380 direct flights and got slugged for $3,000 in taxes and fees. Ouch. I then decided to do research AFTER I had booked (which is always a great idea) and saw how the fees had increased last year. It looks like the taxes include a $1K fee for each of us charged as a FF levy. I could have saved $2,000 in fees by transferring to SQ but I didn't research that until after....

The upside (post-booking) is that I couldn't find any available flights on Krisflyer (either unavailable or waitlisted right through September), whereas on Etihad I could pretty well pick any flight I wanted. The op was very helpful and could have got me just about any flight on his screen. A first-world problem sigh... but just glad to be confirmed and going. :)

What a ripoff! Makes QF surcharges look like bargain.

On QF9 and QF10, the cost would have been -

So very little difference in the cash component between EY (via VA) and QF (AUD34.42 to be exact). The EY 380 J seat is far superior however so the EY route is the one to go with.

I was joking :)

People usually complain about QF surcharges (I got ripped off many times on the LHR route) but forgetting there are other naughty kids on the block.

We still paid around $2500 in taxes using Singapore in J for 2pax to LHR before the krisflyer changes.... so we paid quite a few less pts but quite a few more dollars!

Looks like no matter who you go with you will get slapped with similar taxes for J. Is there anyone amongst the popular options from AU that charge less tax?
