A couple of us are thinking of flying ourselves down to King Island in TAS for a weekend.

Has anyone been?
Any tips of where to stay? What to do? etc?

The cheese factory is obviously on the list, as well as some crayfish, and beef, but any other suggestions are appreciated.

No clue but following for info as its sonething id like to do.

The original Currie golf course is a very different course. It is on the west of the island with strong winds coming in from Bass Strait most of the time.So hitting uphill you get a lofted club and let the wind carry it an amazing distance. However if you get any elevation hitting downhill the ball tends to do a U-turn and finish behind you.

Otherwise it is just chill and enjoy the food.King Island also has good beef.another is wallaby-a very lean meat and not a gamey taste. They used to do a very good wallaby shank at the hotel in Currie.

Personally I haven't been. Pretty keen though. Posting to follow the thread. Is there still a DC3 charter going there. ?

Bugger, might have to stick to NZ for the overseas dining.

Maybe we can have an AFF Do here...and charter a whole plane!! Won't be cheap though although accommodation doesn't look too expensive. ..is it possible to redeem an award flight on Rex?

I think Rex are "fly ten, get one free".

The food is sublime - great lamb and beef, as well as the cheese. Scallop pies...

There's fairy penguin night spotting tours, too. You can't eat any of those, tho'.

But it is very retro. Think 1982 time warp...

Have been four times. This is my favourite place to get away.

Boomerang by the Sea offers the only motel style accommodation on the island. I stay there to keep costs down. It's about an 8 minute walk into Currie which is the main town. Beautiful ocean views from every room. Please please ensure you try the fried Brie from their (pricey but great) restaurant.

For a bigger group, like a family, maybe the A frames place would be a good idea. Easily fits 6, but is a drive into town.

On the island there's no PT, you'll need to hire a car. Two options for that. Choose either.

The dairy is brilliant for cheese lovers, check opening hours first.

Grassy is the old mining town which has a pretty cool abandoned bit to it. Check it out.
Two supermarkets in Currie, next to each other, have all you need at reasonable prices. Probably 10-20% more than mainland.

Best tip I have for KI is just drive somewhere, then walk. I'd give myself at least three days of solid exploring for the island.

As for flying in, for those S or E of Melb, consider flying KI Airlines. Same price as Rex but pretty cool to fly their smaller planes. Also very, very convenient flying out of Moorabin. Otherwise there's Rex from Tulla. Most people from Sydney and more north charter flights because it's cheaper, in groups.

I've probably missed heaps, but I absolutely love this place, so of there's any questions just ask.

My god the memories - 1980 to 1987 I spent 2 to 3 days every month alternation King Island / Flinders Island buying sheep and cattle which we freighted back to Australia for slaughter or paddock.

Even back then KI was as boring as batsh*t whereas FI was a sensation. KI terrain flat a cough carters hat and so boring - FI terrain sublime and so interesting. KI inhabitants so untrusting and so unfriendly - FI locals just a bunch of stars who treated all visitors like members of their own families. Nothing to do on KI apart from drinking yourselves into oblivion. Yes the meat good and so it should be - so boring after 1 or 2 days - best 2 things ever to come out of KI are flt to LST and flt to MBW - MHO of course.

FI on other hand sensational - if you like fishin' shootin' huntin' crayin' then you will love it - food here also always good but as a tourist destination - I think you could do a lot better than either - but depends what you want.

penegal - count me out mate whichever weekend you choose as I am sure I will be busy.

I do have some pics of both KI and FI somewhere but I know I was looking for them only a month or so ago - we got stuck on KI one trip when the weather closed in - single engine plane - was with 3 other guys who had bought a bag of live crays each so we had to go down to the little local abbs and fire up the copper to cook them as we were stuck there for couple days - one of the guys with me on that trip was asking about the pics just recently but I just cannot find them.

Here are a couple of pics from FI when we had to go out and 'get dinner' one day.

NO - the horse was not dinner - I think we were after bush turkeys that day.

Having been to both KI and FI last year I would hands down pick KI, any time! To each their own.
