We will have a 2 night stopover in KL in Feb 2012 (there previously in the early 1990's), and I am after some suggestions for hotel bookings. I have read older threads about what to do in KL and we will enjoy some of those suggestions.
We do not hold any hotel chain status & because of our travel patterns and preferences will not be likely to do so in the future. We are confident in using public transport & keen walkers so that may affect location. Some old posts indicate street booze can be expensive, so does that make club lounges particulaly attractive in KL? (I drink beer & scotch & Mrs RB is a drinker of sparkling)
Our stay is a Mon & Tues night & I would like to spend no more than $150 Aust a night if possible & late checkout would be a bonus- is this possible?:)

My recommendation having sent many many clients there would be the Mandarin Oriental, have never had a client do anything but rave about the hotel and the staff.

Its about $15 a night over your budget, but if you can travel down a Virtuoso Agent, you'll get the following inclusions complimentary...

- Upgrade on Arrival (subject to availability)
- Daily American Breakfast
- Traditional High Tea once during stay
- Welcome Gift

(There are only available when booking through a Virtuoso agent or perhaps if you're an AMEX Centurion cardholder as they tend to mirror the same amenities with their program).

If you have trouble tracking down a Virtuoso advisor send me a PM.

Having Hyatt Diamond, Hilton Diamond and SPG Platinum, it usually takes a pretty special property to get me to stay in a hotel outside of those chains...but MO KL is one of those properties. :) In fact it's the only non-SPG property we're staying at during our entire honeymoon next year (with the exception of Vegas)!

It's not super modern, but has loads of classic elegance, and if you get a room facing the twin towers - an amazing view!

The Westin is also quite nice (and central) too, but the MO's my pick. Head to the Westin's latin restaurant one night though (QBa) - great place.

Cheers,
- Febs.

I stay at the Westin KL but that's because it's in a good location, the hotel isn't too shabby and I enjoy SPG benefits as a Platinum. However, I would be tempted ... very tempted to stay at The Traders Hotel, in a twin tower view room. I don't know what the rates are, but I go for drinks up at their SkyBar and view of the towers at night cannot be beaten. The hotel is also part of the Shangri La chain so it isn't too bad at all.

KL hotels are somewhat my specialist subject as I have stayed in or had colleagues stay in them.

Traders - great rooms, great service. Still pretty new maybe 5 or 6 years old. Has some great restaurants plus the Sky Bar which has an amazing view. It is a bit of a walk to get anywhere except the convention centre. There is an electric buggy that takes hotel guest to and from KLCC or you can walk through the convention centre and underground tunnel air con all the way.

Shangri la - was recently refurbished. Good service and the feeling of a grand hotel. The monorail runs right past it, however it is in between two stations, I think about three blocks to the stations. Close to Jalan P. Ramlee where there are some night clubs and restaurants.

Mandarin Oriental - I have never stayed there, but the upper management from my work always stayed there and they always said good things about it. It is next to KLCC so you can walk though Suria KLCC to get the LRT station (under ground train)

Ascott - Fantastic service - Big rooms good for a longer stay although they are showing sings of wear. Has a good restaurant/bar Sevenatenine downstairs (guests get a 10% discount) and sky lounge on the 22 floor puts on a good breakfast. Maybe a fifteen minute walk to either monorail station or LRT.

JL Marriot - a grand hotel, good location right in Bukit Bintang (Star Hill). Joins with the Starhill Gallery shopping mall also the Pavilion shopping mall over the road. Monorail station is about a block away.

Grand Millennium - is just over the road from the Marriot and next to the Pavilion. I had one colleague who quite likes it.

Westin - just along from the Marriot. I haven't stayed there but been to two wedding receptions there. Seemed pretty nice and good service.

Novotel - cheap price, but nothing special. Although in a good location just behind the Pavilion.

Prince Hotel - Good price. Although it is tucked away a bit.

Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur - is a bit further out from the central city. Right next to strangely named - Asian Heritage Row where a lot of restaurants and night clubs are.

Hilton KL - great service and great rooms. Right next to KL Sentral train station, so lots of choices LRT, MRT, monorail, airport train and other trains. Not much close by except the train station and the National museum.

Le Meridian - is right next to Hilton so the same comments apply.

Crown Plaza - poor service, average rooms. I would avoid. But it is right next to a monorail station.

It's one stop away (by train) to Mid-Valley Megamall, which is a huge mid-class shopping mall and The Gardens which is a high-class shopping mall.

Agreed - stayed there before and it's very average. It's very nearby the Pavillion Shopping Center though.

Most of the above hotels that are near train lines are also very easy to get to major attractions via monorail or LRT.

If you're after somewhere outside KL, take a look at Sunway Resort hotel. Might be slightly above your price range, but there is a big shopping center, theme park, night club, cheaper eateries and other ameneties of a 5 star hotel nearby. Excellent service and their club rooms are awesome. I would recommend them only if you don't want to go to KL city center though.

xt are you referring to KL Hilton or the PJ Hilton? I have stayed in PJ and it was pretty close to mid valley.

Has anyone stayed at the intercontinental in KL?

+1 for Traders Hotel. Stayed there last year - fantastic service, get a room with a Petronas Towers view - a great spectacle at night
It's a short walk across the park past the lake to Suria Shopping Centre and their LRT - convenient

I stay at the Dorsett Regency as it has all that I need and is very well located.

Rates from around $90.00 with earlybird at $70.

Travel Agents also have deals from time to time.

You can get from the airport - main terminal, not LCCT - to Le Meridien in under 45 minutes - very convenient as it's on the other end of the high speed airport train line. Being at Central station (which is actually on the edge of the city), you can get on most of the train lines to get to practically anywhere in the city and its surrounds. Chinatown is only one stop on the light rail. However after hours it's a little lonely, and to get into the city it's a 15-20 minute ride on the light rail or no more than 20-25 ringgit in a taxi. One plus is proximity to Mid Valley Megamall and the Gardens, which are good for shopping. Same applies to the KL Hilton, the posh sister next door.

A little known city hotel within your budget is G Tower. It's not a big hotel, but it's conveniently near the KLCC area (next to Ampang Park station, one stop after the Petronas towers stop). They have a very neat "Bridge Bar" with a view of the city, and offer you a "welcome home" coughtail there every evening. It was a serendipitous find and very good if you're not loyal to any hotel chain, but at the same time it might not be as consistent in its service as one of the hotel chains might be.

The Mandarin Oriental is very nice, and its location is unbeatable. A tower/park view room is good for the soul, but not for the pocket. When travelling on my own funds I will quite happily stay somewhere less expensive but drop into the MO for high tea, which is a pleasure.

Any comments on Doubletree Hilton - about 30% cheaper than KL Hilton on dates I am looking at
(and as a recently matched Diamond am looking to use)

Any comments on Doubletree Hilton

It's on the other side of the intersection from G Tower that I mentioned in my earlier post, so one stop from KLCC (or a sweaty 10-15 minute walk). Taxis shouldn't be a problem, as it's on a major thoroughfare. Peak hour at that intersection can be a pain though, so if you have to get to the airport at busy times, catch the train.

I can't speak for the hotel itself - except that it is very new. Being Doubletree's first (and I think only) hotel in Southeast Asia I don't imagine they would have left anything out of the usual Hilton formula.

we always stay at Royale Bintang.
Cheap and Cheerful really. Breakfast is fine. Pool is great and the location is great too. walking distance to Chinese Markets and shopping on Bukat Bintang and the Pavillion etc. many good restaurant along this street too. Rooms are OK, not 5 *, but fine (and i'm a bit fussy). food downstairs in the bar is good too. Rooms cheap compared to some others. more for spending on shopping..............only 10mins in taxi to KLCC

I stayed the Grand Millenium in 2010 for a weeks holiday in KL. I was quite impressed, we got a club room for about $150 per night.
Club lounge was fantastic - lots of snacks, lots of booze and great service. The staff didn't mind if you brought in a guest either (some club lounges get a bit snooty about that).
The club rate included breakfast (in the club lounge or the big buffet downstairs - the downstairs option was much better, great range, brilliant quality).

Hotel itself is a bit dated, I believe it used to be a Regent, so has lots of black marble and gold trimmings. The rooms are okay, nothing special, but perfectly comfortable and adequate. Staff were friendly too. Location is right on Bukit Bintang, really close to all the shopping malls, only a 5 minute walk to the monorail, and a 10 minute walk to great restaurants.

I would definetly stay there again.

+1 to Traders (get an executive club room) ... I don't sway away from starwood often these days (all 3 of their KL properties are very good, by the way), but I'll make an exception for this place. Right across from KLCC which has a train station in the basement.

I stayed there as a recently matched Diamond for three nights at the beginning of this month. It is very new.

I booked the cheapest room and got an executive floor upgrade. We really enjoyed the executive lounge which has a small smoker's balcony with a view of the Petronas Towers. The wine, beer & Jack Daniel's we drank in there would have cost us more that we paid for the room if it wasn't free. The canapes are great too. They also do excellent fried eggs (over easy) for breakfast.

Free booze and food, and a smokers balcony. What more could you ask for?
