Hello all,

The missus and I are off to NZ in March for a few days and are flying QF over to AKL and
EK back (price and times were suited best to us)

GF has been following a kosher diet since an early age was wondering about the quality of the meals that will be served with both airlines. I have had vegetarian meals on qantas and it wasn't the best, in fact - terrible

Can anyone shed light on what will be served? We will be served lunch and dinner

I am no expert on religious dietary restrictions, but have had some experience helping out colleagues. All Emirates meals are Halal. From what I recall don't think they had a kosher meal option. Also both terms have different interpretations by different religious authorities, on the whole Halal and Kosher are extremely similar. To the extent that if a meal is halal is likely also kosher. Although the inverse is not necessarily true. There are exceptions, such as camel, but it is unlikely you will be served those types of meals on airlines.

Wikipedia has a good description of the similarities and differences. Comparison of Islamic and Jewish dietary laws

On the whole Emirates meals, I would rate them a bit above average for airline food. Also it depends on the class of travel you are flying in.

I haven't had any experience with specials meals on QF so can't advise.

Halal and kosher are not the same (except superficially). While the killing method may be the same, it is the circumstances under which the killing takes place and then the circumstances of the actual meal preparation that are important from a kosher point of view.

There is far more to being kosher than just mode of killing and some food exclusions.

It is also the method of serving with Kosher. One important point, besides killing and specific restrictions, is meat and dairy must be kept totally separate including duplicate preparation.

I didn't really want to go into the fine detail. That would involve telling the joke about the religious Jew who had 5 fridges.

What you will be served won't be all that great. Sometimes as bad as "here's an Apple," or a packet of rice cakes with some very coughpy drip.

Most of my friends bring their own food on the flight with them, particularly for the short(-ish) distance that it is to NZ. Pack a lunch of Glick's bagels and Continental sliced meats on the way there, and find a supermarket and kosher foods via the Auckland community for the same on the way back...
