Hi all,

I am confused so wonder if readers can share their understanding of SQ program...

I have zero in Elite Miles and zero in PPS Value on my account. However, I have a bit over 60,000 in Krisflyer Miles. What does Krisflyer Miles achieve and be used for?

Thanks

Your 60 000 miles are redeemable miles, you use them to redeem for flight awards or upgrades.

Elite Miles and PPS Value determine your Elite or PPS status respectively with the airline. These are reset every year. Elite Miles can be earned on all eligible SQ/MI/partner airlines' flights, whereas only J and F segments on SQ and MI count towards PPS Value.

Krisflyer miles: Number of miles you have accrued through whatever means (eg flying, credit card, hotel stays etc). These can be redeemed for flights and any other things the program may let you redeem miles for.

Elite miles: Number of miles you have earned in your qualification year from flying Singapore Airlines and other Star Alliance carriers on qualifying fares. The total is used to recognise your Krisflyer and Star Alliance Status (25,000 in a year = Silver, 50,000 in a year = Gold)

PPS value: Number of $ (denominated in SGD) that you have spent with Singapore Airlines or Silk Air on travel in either Business or First class. Counts towards PPS status (which is achieved on reaching $25,000 spend in a year). PPS is higher status than Krisflyer Gold, and also grants Star Alliance gold. The highest status, Solitaire PPS occurs upon spending $250,000 within a five year period on business and first class:!:

Thank you for feedback. I don't believe I will be doing much flying with SQ, let alone business and first class. Krisflyer points is target I can easily work towards through thoughtful spend with credit cards. I guess the awards and upgrades are not restricted to SQ but also other Star Alliance partners.

Go to Singaporeair.com and login using your Krisflyer membership. Use the Redeem Points links to have a look at how far you can fly on SQ or *A.

70K gets to return J flights to NZ.

My Apologies, I meant to say "Business Class Saver" (J Saver)

Actually, it is 90,000 on J Saver award. If you use online redemption and take advantage of the 15% discount then it is 76,500. However, if you own one of Westpac's SIA Credit Card, you can get a 25,000 point discount voucher, taking it down to 65,000 points for J Saver.

If you already have 60K miles, it might worth your while to get Westpac SIA card just to get bonus points and discount voucher :p

The discount/loyalty voucher is only received if you renew after the first 12 months.

ANstar says "76,500 miles will get you business class return to SE Asia."

And joemelb refers to Y save award.

I am confused. Business class or economy class?

My current balance of just over 60,000 Krisflyer points includes 10,000 bonus points from Westpac when I first got their WBC-SIA cards (Krisflyer AMEX and Visa).

How do I get the 25,000 point discount voucher?

I think there is a typo. The correct answer is that 90,000 is for the Business Class saver retrun award (not Y saver award) - booked over the phone.

Online booking gets a 15% discount - making it 76,500 miles.

Further more - on the current promo - if booked before 15 Sep and travel before 30 Sep :!:, there is a 25% discount for online bookings - making it 67,500 pts.

Now with 60,000 pts, obviously you cannot do return business saver - but you are very close to a one way business saver booked online (38,250) that could be coupled with a one way economy saver (23,375) (ignoring the promo expiring 15 Sep).

All sounds exciting. I am just wondering which destinations in SE Asia are possible. and from Sydney, of course.

The 60,000 points I have is what's shown on SIA account page. But there are possibly another 20,000-30,000 to be credited.

For points levels and desinations click on the link One Way Saver Awards. (then deduct 15% if booked online). For the point levels mentioned above you can get to all of SE Asia plus HK, Taiwan & southern China. One point to note from Sydney you can't use business saver awards on the A380 (or the 777-300ER's which have their new business class.)

Yes, there is a typo. I meant to say "J Saver". My bad.

J Saver on SIA is not available on A380 or 777-300ER (or newer J seats). And 90,000 will get you from Melbourne to Taipei, Hong Kong or Bangkok (including Singapore of course). I assume it will be the same from Sydney.

I have redeemed two J Savers return to Bangkok with my partner in October with a Singapore stopover for 76,500 each. No problem whatsoever with the redemption, and got upgraded to A380  (Because I originally booked on 747.)

I am looking forward to my 25,000 points discount voucher sometimes next year. I will book my partner on Y while travel on J myself.

In the interest of getting a feel for the SQ taxes and charges on various redemptions can you post what the charges were on the Bangkok redemption please.

If you are interested in the South Pacific if you check the chart for Star Alliance partners you will note it is only 25000 points economy return from Australia to not only Auckland (or anywhere in New Zealand) but also Tahiti, Fiji, Vanuatu. Tonga, Cook Islands, New Caledonia flying Air New Zealand. 35000 points business return. It is where our family usually use our points.

Just as an idea SQ taxes and surcharges for SYD-SIN-BKK return award back in May 2009 were ~AUD440. There was a stuff up with my booking and I had to finalise it over the phone and I was charged in SGD instead of AUD and the taxes and surcharges were ~AUD400.

Until I got and started using Westpac/Krisflyer cards, I had always focussed on OW trips but I am surprising myself with FF points accumulated over past 3 months. Today's account shows 87k points.

Interestingly, Virgin Atlantic requires 70k for Syd-Hkg for business award but I read elsewhere that this may not be true business class but PE. SQ may be better value for this sector then.

Are there other good value sectors across SQ / *A group?
