krisflyer to velocity; earn versus transfer

Hi there,I've tried to work this out myself - and think I have - but want to check with the experts on here to see if I have it right.
I'm taking an SQ flight in D and have both krisflyer and velocity accounts.
Basically, I'm pretty sure I'd like the points to end up in my velocity account, since I have exactly zero krisflyer points and am confident that velocity points will be more useful to me for my expected travel.
So! It seems I can either choose to have the points directly accrued to velocity, or transfer them later. Also seems that if I go direct, they accrue at one-to-one, (at 125% of miles in D with either krisflyer or velocity) but if I transfer later it becomes 1.35:1, kris to velocity. Hence it seems clear I should accrue direct to velocity but, like I say, just want to check that I have all this right. Am I missing something?
Any light shed on this much appreciated.

Welcome to AFF!

You are absolutely correct, unless you plan on doing a lot of flying on SQ and use them in Krisflyer, better to accrue straight to velocity, you will also get velocity status credits that way. Furthermore small balances in Krisflyer not so good, as the points expire three years after you earn them.

The main exception is a scenario is where you plan to redeem a flight on SQ, then you may be better off crediting your SQ flight to SQ and transferring points in from velocity (or a credit card) when you want to redeem, as typically you need less Krisflyer points for a SQ flight than Velocity points.

Hi dajop,

Thanks for the welcome and thanks very much for your confirmation and advice. Very helpful.

Hello JackMiles,

Perhaps worth mentioning at the counter upon check-in and that you'd like the points and status credits accrued to your Velocity account. I was caught off-guard when the person checking myself and partner in 'assumed' that the points were to be accrued to my KF instead.

There's an option to include your VFF number during the booking process but always good to be sure, to be sure.. :)

Hi slinkyap,

Thanks heaps for your reply - sound advice. I actually included my krisflyer account at time of booking, having not thought all this through, and now the SQ Manage Bookings page won't let me change it (or rather, I can go in and change it but then when I save that page of details, the summary page shows it has reverted to my KF account) but I have emailed SQ and I'm sure I can get it sorted. But good idea to re-confirm upon check-in.

Thanks again.

I had the same issue with SQ website/ Manage Booking re changing it from KF to VA. It took 3 calls to KF to get it sorted...

Hi Milboo,

Yeah, I suspect it might take a phone call or two for me too, based on the reply email I got from them. They told me I had to put in a velocity number for the system to recognise it as such, to which I of course replied to the effect; believe me that's what I've been doing, I know it looks like I have put a KF number in but that's because the system keeps changing it back - ie, the very problem I emailed you about! :(

Anyoop, I'm still hopeful it can be sorted with a minimum of further hassle. Meanwhile, thanks for the heads-up on your similar experience.

Hi WorkingHard,

Thanks for your reply. My second email to SQ seems to have done the trick and my booking now shows my velocity number attached...but I'll take the kind advice on this thread and double-check at the airport.

When you get your boarding pass, check to make sure your Velocity details are printed on it.

Enjoy your trip.
