LAN chile failed to deliver my bags, but claim they should arrive late tonight or early tomorrow.

As a OneWorld Emerald I asked what compensation I should get. He said nothing for the first 24 hours. I find that hard to believe. Can anyone clarify? Their site says: For international flights you will be you should be compensated in accordance with applicable international conventions.
What conventions?

The LAN experiment so far hasn't been successful. I have been seated at the back of the plane on every leg. Apart from queues and lounge access, they don't seem to know what an emerald frequent flyer is. I'll go back to qantas for my pacific crossings I think.

I think only travel insurance can help you in this case. I don't know for sure but I'm guessing 'international conventions' relate only to (permanently) lost luggage.

My experiences with LAN have always been extremely positive - but I've always been in J.

My bag was lost a few years back on a SEA-xDFW-xJFK-SCL why-fly-direct-when-you-can-connect itinerary ;). It failed to arrive at SCL but was almost certainly lost by AA on the US domestic sectors as DFW was in a shambles because of severe thunderstorms earlier in the day.

The only LAN sector was JFK-SCL but LAN gave me $US100 or $200 cash for my trouble. That may have been because I was in J. (I've had experience with BA losing my bag LHR-PEK where I was compensated immediately in the form of a pre-loaded debit card because I was in J but my travel companion in whY whose bag was also lost was offered nothing). Maybe the conventions are class-dependent?

Earlier this year I flew a QF codeshare JASA on LAN metal AKL-SCL and it was excellent.

I was connecting out to Easter Island for three days so I told them to hold my bag in SCL until I got back, so it ended up being a blessing because I travelled light to Easter Island, always having changes of clothes in my carry-on.

Thanks for the responses. They are insisting there is no compensation if it's under 24 hours - even though in reality for me it's my second day. Saving money, LAN? Yet when a passenger like me wakes up next morning and has to wear the same clothes all their advertising and branding no longer evokes warm feelings - but a resentment of the airline. I cross the Pacific all the time, and LAN is an option I decided to try...

When Qantas lose my luggage they immediately give me access to $200. It makes me feel very differently about the whole experience. LAN so far seem like a third world airline by comparison. We arrived early in Santiago (the connection where my luggage was lost) en route to Lima so why did they lose all the Sydney luggage (there were others). it looks like I can't have confidence in their ability.

I actually don't think there are any rules that an airline must compensate you for delayed luggage at point of arrival. Happy to be corrected though. (IATA does refer to delayed luggage compensation via Montreal convention, but doesnt indicate payments must be up front )

This is why travel insurance is a must.

And yes, Qantas are pretty good around paying up for delayed bags.

Yes I take that on board about obligation. So as someone who crosses the pacific regularly, why would I choose LAN? Qantas get my loyalty because they earn it.

Well assuming you are Qf plat... Unless the price on LA was significantly cheaper or the journey was much faster or you liked something about their service... I can't see why Qf wouldn't be the default option.

I NEVER travel int. without having change of clothing and some toiletries in my carry-on. At least three days socks & jocks and a couple of shirts. It's little weight or space for that. I think it's pretty brave to do otherwise .

It's all very well getting some cash compensation but then you have to have the time, right time of day and location to go shopping for things like that.
