Hi all

I have locked in travel to NZ in July. My plan is to fly LAN to AKL and then JQ to WLG. I can get the reasonable J fare SYD-AKL on LAN (same price as QF whY ) and with a bit of wiggle have the extra baggage and seat selection on JQ AKL-WLG-AKL.

The driver for the LAN flight is that I need to be in WLG for a full day and there is no way to spend a full day in WLG and get back to Oz that day (last flight is around 5PM which means leaving the office at 2PM and even for me that isnt a full day) so I am staying the night at AKL airport and flying back the next morning on the 5:30AM flight.

So the question is - can I check my bags through SYD-AKL-WLg or do I need to collect in AKL and re check in? I have 2 - 3 hours connection time in AKL so not concerned about timing. I am just considering whether to check a bag or take it on board as I am only there for two nights.

Also wondering whether I can check through to WLG from SYD?

Baggage to WLG: As you're transferring from an international to domestic connection then that's a big no.

Bagage to SYD: Sorry, you'll have to check in again. According to the JQ interline table you and your bags can be ticketed through to SYD on the proviso it's on a single ticket and transferring between international flights.

Quick follow up questions:

- Any idea which check in desk LAN uses at AKL?
- Do I still have to pay the departure tax?
- Can I use the premium route through immigration (I am in J and OWE)?

Not really a big no as the luggage needs to be collected anyway before passing NZ customs. You then wheel it on a trolley the 10 minute walk between terminals or take the complimentary inter-terminal bus to JQ NZ domestic check in.

Assuming separate tickets then no. Not a big issue, especially as an overnight at AKL is envisaged. As before you need to change terminals, either by trolley or bus.

I presume the Novatel has been targeted for accommodation; this is a 40 metre walk from the international terminal. If so, then you need to change terminals as before, either by trolley or bus. If not then ground transport from Domestic with bags to the hotel; come back to the International terminal in the morning.

AKL departure TAX is absorbed into the Taxes when buying the ticket these days. NZD14.50 in and NZD14.50 out, so it's already done.

LAN use a normal check-in check-in area, not the Qantas premium room.

However, there is nothing to stop you popping in to the Qantas premium area to do your "Customs Pre-Clearance" before heading up to departures.

Thanks serfty - I will be staying at the Novotel given the OMG o'clock departure...

I will only have the rollaboard and the laptop bag so I hope that will pass muster as hand luggage...
