The official word from Virgin Blue
V AUSTRALIA AND DELTA AIR LINES INK FREQUENT-FLYER, LOUNGE AND CODESHARE AGREEMENTS

Tuesday, 15 December, 2009 (Australia) – Virgin Blue Airlines Group’snew boutique international long-haul airline, V Australia, and the world’s largest airline, US-based, Delta Air Lines, are pleased to announce that from today members of each carrier’s frequent flyer programmes will enjoy reciprocal points accrual for travel with both airlines and reciprocal lounge access within Australia and the US.

Virgin Blue Airlines Group’s Velocity Members can now begin earning points to even more global destinations with the addition today of the Delta Air Lines route network. Having the ability to earn points for travel across the US with the addition of Delta, means Velocity Members can now enjoy the benefits of a truly global loyalty programme with airline partners covering the world.

Delta Air Lines is the only U.S. global airline that flies to six continents and offers customers the world’s largest network of destinations and the world’s largest frequent flier program with more than 70 million members.

Velocity Rewards is the award-winning loyalty program of the Virgin Blue Airlines Group. In 2009, at the annual Freddie Awards in Florida, Velocity was named Program of The Year among all airlines in the Asia/Pacific Airline category. The program also won five of the other eight awards this year including Best Award, Best Award Redemption, Best Web Site, Best Member Communications and Best Affinity Credit Card.

Complementing the reciprocal points accrual agreement for Velocity and SkyMiles Members, the two carriers have also implemented a reciprocal airport lounge sharing agreement, allowing Velocity Gold Members and VA Business Class Guests access to more than 50 Delta Air Lines Sky Club locations. Delta’s BusinessELite travelers as well as Delta Sky Club members also will benefit from access to Virgin Blue’s domestic lounge network within Australia.

As part of the ongoing strengthening of the co-operation agreement between Virgin Blue Airlines Group and Delta Air Lines, the carriers have also announced the first phase of their expanded code-share agreement, signaling
V Australia’s commitment to expanding its reach beyond Los Angeles and confirming Delta Air Lines as
V Australia’s latest code-share partner.

Virgin Blue Airlines Group, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder, Brett Godfrey, said these new agreements are a huge step forward in the airline group’s commitment to making travel between Australia and the United States easier.

“Our aim is to make trans-Pacific travel as affordable and hassle free as possible; delivering seamless domestic and international connections between V Australia and Delta Air Lines. Our Guests can now seamlessly book their V Australia and Delta Air Lines flights at the same time through their travel agent, or via one of our Guest Contact Centres, from their origin port in either the USA or Australia all on one ticket.

“These agreements are also incredibly significant for our Velocity Members, because until now the USA has been the glaring missing piece to our global frequent flyer programme. Our Guests can now earn and redeem their Velocity Points when flying with us and our partner airlines right around the globe,” Mr Godfrey said.

Further information on the new airport lounge sharing agreement:

Question for anyone able to answer -- from my reading of the press release, the wording doesn't mention status earn on DL-coded flights, only points earn. Is this something coming later or not at all? Additionally, what about DL codeshares on someone elses' metal?

I will check this, but my understanding:
  • status earn is on VA code on DL operated metal but not otherwise on DL metal.
  • it follows that no status on DL codes on others metal.
  • we haven't announced any further plans but discussions ongoing - I think it's reasonable to expect reciprocal burn arrangements will be announced.

Hi

I can see that Delta Sky Club Members can use Virgin Lounges, would Virgin Lounge member be able to use Delta Sky Club (when flying DL/ VA) any time soon?

Cheers

Ummmm.....Yes - don't mean to sound rude but try reading either of the posts by Futaris (i.e. the thread starter) or by DJ737 (full press release) again.

Hi there

I think what FrankC is asking, are Lounge members granted access to Delta Sky Clubs as opposed to Velocity Gold cardholders.

The media release from LV doesn't make this point clear.

.....and while we on on lounge access issues, can VA J passengers access the Virgin Blue domestic lounge when departing from the Melbourne international terminal.

ie : Check in for VAustralia MEL-LAX non-stop service, go to DJ Dom lounge for a few "refreshments" before proceeding to international departure formalities, and a few more "refreshments" in the MH lounge.

This might seem a bit trivial to most but a smoker about to embark on a trans pacific flight might like a drink & a few ciggies before being trapped in the international departures area.

It's great that the DJ lounge is landside for this reason.

Cough, Hack, Cough :-)

You are quite right. My apologies to FrankC - it's me who needs to read more carefully
At this stage no, Lounge members (as opposed to Velocity Gold members) do not get access to Delta lounges unless flying J class. The media release is correct by ommission but agree that is not necessarily clear and leaves the question begging.

The source of confusion seems to be that the extent of reciprocity is not equal as per FrankC's question (double ). The negotiated level of reciprocity reflects that Delta SkyClub membership is more expensive to join than The Lounge (and their Gold frequent flyer equivalents do not get it automatically like Gold Velocity) because it is a fully fledged international lounge network with 50 locations.

However, it is a point that I will take up internally - we need to be clear about what the nature of The Lounge will be and also manage alignment with Velocity which is increasingly "international". I can think now that if The Lounge were to be fully-fledged international with wide-ranging reciprocal arrangements the price would go up. Curious as to members opinions as to what this would be worth to them?

What you describe as desirable for smokers is not the present arrangement. I think our bean counters would have a problem with the idea of having to pay for 2 lounge visits. I think also the ops people would want to get people through Customs/Immigration/Shopping Mall and into the international departures area as soon as possible.

Hi All,

Only just started taking an interest in FF / Miles and stuff. And mainly kicked off from the Delta Gold Medallian status i received and what looks like complimentary Delta Sky Club membership.

So as most of my flying is in Australia, does anyone know if its possible (or in the pipeline) for Delta MQM to be obtained from Virgin Blue flights?

Have been reading the posts on the site and there was talk of codeshare with DJ&VA/DL and reciprocity with VA/DL, but cant see any mention of MQM eligibility?

Cheers
