Have been looking around at hotels in Las Vegas. There seem to be more awful ones than nice ones, if TripAdvisor is anything to go by. One I have found that sounds nice is The Carriage House, which is just off the strip. We will most likely arrive in LV on a Sunday and stay two nights.

What is your budget kiwi2768?

But for the time being, I'll suggest The Bellagio, using this code: https://reservations.mgmmirage.com/bookingengine.aspx?pid=190&host=offer&code=BPERF8

upto 25% off, rooms ~$150aud per night

And another suggestion is The Encore www.encorelasvegas.com , using the promo code EARLYBOOKING , similar pricing to The Bellagio but you likely get a Resort Suite for the same price.

(I currently have bookings at both these hotels for a visit in July, though they are cancellable if I do find something better)

We want to try to stay under AU$100 a night if possible since we're going to be in the US for 7-8 weeks. At this stage I can get The Carriage House for US$177 for 2 nights including tax. The thing I like about The Carriage House is that it doesn't have a casino attached to it, so should be quieter and without the cigarette smoke coming through the aircon (hubby doesn't smoke).

Only once stayed off The Strip in LV.Convinced me that The Strip is where its at.Always deals at some of the big name places.Quick look at Bestflights-
Luxor-$116
NYNY-$138
Monte Carlo-$135
Ballys-$185
MGM Grand-$193
Total for 2 nights in $A.
Have stayed in Luxor,NYNY,MGM-I enjoyed them all.

With Las Vegas there have always been a couple of rules to follow to ensure you dont pay above the odds:

1. Weekend (FRI/SAT) or when major events are on book accom through travel agents in Australia.
2. Non Weekend nights where there is no event book direct.
3. Stay at a Casino, because your accom is being subsidised by the activity in the gaming rooms and you have a much better access to eateries.

You wont have an issue with smoke in the aircon, not if you pay more than $20 a room :) And many hotels offer free food vouchers as well, again trying to get you on the floor to pay for it!

My daughter just spent 2 weeks in Las Vegas attending the WPII 2010 Conference at the MGM. Over 12,000 registered to the conference. The rooms booked through the conference organizers was $140 a night at the start and as the conference came closer dropped to $120 a night.
I referred her to Las Vegas Coupons - Hotel Promotion Codes & Discount Show Tickets where deals can be found using Promo Codes.
She ended up paying $65 a night for a room and included 2 for 1 breakfast offer.
When she arrived at the MGM, she mentioned that she was on her own and if she could change the 2 for 1 food offer and they did give her some credit vouchers and free drink vouchers.
When the conference finished , her husband arrived and they left the MGM and went to the very new Aria and were paying $149 a night , again using promo offer from smartervegas.com

After each booking was made online, she telephoned the hotel ( using Skype ) to confirm, no smoking and any other deals.

MGM Signature is worth a look....a walkway connects you to the MGM.

I always visit Vegas early in the week to avoid the Fri / Sat night room premiums.

Cheers
Dave.

Thanks everyone. I just love this site :D

I have heard that LV is a lot cheaper during the week, that's why we're planning on being there on a Sunday rather than a Friday or Saturday. I'm wondering if some of the very nice hotels will be cheaper nearer the time of our stay.

I will keep an eye on the link provided by Alanslegal. Most of the hotels there seem to have special deals that expire prior to our arrival.

Stayed at the MGM Grand for 4 nights last month, first night (Sat) was $120 then down to $60 per night for the next three nights. A good hotel in a good location.

Keep on checking the various sites listed, say once a week, as they get updated with new offers quite regularly.

For my upcoming visit to Las Vegas in July, I am staying at the MGM on the Saturday and Sunday night, which I'm using this code, https://reservations.mgmmirage.com/...2&kbid=1576222&pid=001&host=promo&code=MGM039 , which gives 2 complimentary buffets, 2 complimentary coughtails and 2 passes to their nightclub Studio 54 or Tabu. One night is booked under my name, the 2nd night is under my girlfriend's name - so we get double those above benefits (but we have to technically check out of my room / then check into her room). For the both nights, the total cost is $225aud ... and the freebies itself are worth roughly that amount :)

Then on the Monday and Tuesday night, I'm moving to The Bellagio in a premium lakeshow room for ~$200aud per night. It's pretty expensive for weekday nights but I just had to stay there! You will enjoy the dancing lake show :)

I have previously stayed at Planet Hollywood and Paris Las Vegas - location wise you couldn't beat it being smack bang centre strip but like all large hotels / casino / resorts ....... check-in / check-out periods can be extremely slow and chaotic, so just take that into account.

Just back from Vegas and for the third time we have stayed at Treasure Island, rates were really good
$104 for the Saturday and Monday nights and $66 for the Sunday night . (US $$) and book direct with them, we are members of their TI club and before we arrived found a cheaper rate on their site and they honoured that and threw in 2 breakfast buffetts as well. Its in a good central position and right next door to the Fashion Show Mall, walking distance to Ceasars, Venetian etc and the rooms are lovely, only downside is the $20 a night resort fee that all the hotels charge now and a bit of a con as covers internet access in your room and use of the pool etc. Have previously stayed at MGM but thats too far away, and the Aladdin which is now Planet Hollywood, for my money TI is the best position on the strip. Good Vietnamese restaurant there now too called Pho. Avoid the Gospel Brunch at Mandalay Bay, food is good but the entertainment terrible for $50 each.

One more vote gor the MGM can not beat it for value for money.
But if as you say you prefer a hotel with no casino then I can strongly recommend the Trump. Big rooms, very new 5* hotel and only a short walk (about 5 mins) to the Wynn/Encore end of the strip.
Can usually be had for under $100 a night. With a bit of searching, I stayed there last year for $15 using the vegas.com BRG.

My TA has booked me into Bellagio for one night (1 Sep) for $260 but I think I might cancel and book myself using the above code, which works out $179ish converted to AUD. Unfortunately they can only price match Australian websites (she works for Flight Centre).

Yeah that is the link I used. I'll just have to wait until next pay day in 2 weeks before I can cancel booking via TA and rebook myself.

Hmm, how do they define an Australian web site? Is it one with a .au domain suffix? Is it one from a company registered in Australia? Is it one physically hosted in Australia? Is it one that can be accessed by an Australian user? The internet is global by its very definition (whatever tat is ), so imposing such restrictions is very difficult to justify to me. Seems more like a weasel clause, especially when booking accommodation in the USA.
