I have a high chance of canceling an award flight departing 4/Jan/2009.
I prefer to cancel the flight at close to departure date/time as possible (as an insurance of my new plan with an LCC).

The QF website states that you can cancel 24 hrs before departure by calling the service centre, a couple of questions here....

1. Have anyone done this before ? Do they really allows you to cancel
24 hrs before departure with the usual 5,000 pts penalty ?
2. Is the call directed to Australia, and does the centre has opening / closing times ?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yes, I have cancelled QF awards flights within 48 hours on multiple occassions and received a refund of the points and taxes less the 5000 point fee. I believe Qantas operate call centres in Tasmania and Melbourne (and probably other locations) and they operate 24 hours.

Thanks !

I can save 40,000 points for about $200 AUD by doing it this way ...:D
