Wow, only 205 SC's left for Platinum and still 3 months left to acrue them. Should be a breeze and when returning from SIN tomorrow it's going to be just 175 SC's! Crazy 9 months and it's all done on economy travel .. too many sectors flown for my liking, but what do one do ..

Also got a pleasant surprise arriving at MEL on Wednesday. Got upgraded to business without asking. I presume that was tied in with the 2+ hour delay, but still was a pleasant surprise!

So, in reality how often does upgrades like that happen when you become Platinum? Can it be expected or is it still very much the exception??

Very much the exception, particularly when you are flying the trunk routes along with so many other Plat members.
 
Good luck with accruing the necessary SCs. Achieving WP while only flying economy is a real feat :shock: .

I have been WP for a number of years, and have never had an upgrade. I always fly Y domestically and J internationally, and the only upgrades have been via points or credits.

But still, gaining WP is worthwhile for seating preference, F lounge access, F class checkin etc, and the 100% status bonus :D .

unless you travel on the QF flight at approx 0830 from BNE to CNS in the winter months (nothern hemisphere summer) when the plane is full of tourists ... last winter i was updgraded every time i flew it (about 6 times)
 
I've been platinum for a few years, and get the occasional 1st class upgrade on the long hauls, but expect it to be rare. I use the upgrade credits where possible - my advice is use them as soon as you get enough - they expire and many times an upgrade seat isn't available. I've lost a few of these because I saved them for a particular flight and couldn't use them.

It is nice to see someone with a gold card get trumped by my platinum. I'll hit lifetime Gold soon, but wish there was a lifetime platinum to aim for. It seems after lifetime gold, there's no more to aim for.

Getting closer... 95 to go. By Thursday it will be 15; so close, but not there yet. :evil: Well, now it's well in reach. With over two months to go, it will be a breeze. The only downside is that on international routes, it seems that I will be forced to fly United to the US and Singapore elsewhere. At least on the trunk routes that I frequent. Have two trips to the US within the next three weeks... all on United...

Am I correct in assuming that with Platinum, I can still use the lounge even though I am not flying on Qantas on the day? With Gold that would not be possible, right?! Or? How about Qantas/OneWorld lounges elsewhere on the planet?

Given that upgrade credits aren't dished out anymore, you won't have to worry about them expiring.

I know one person who keeps getting upgraded, even on QF international routes. She flies very rarely, yet 50% of the time she flies, she gets an upgrade. She says she never ever even asks (too timid to ask for anything, never mind an upgrade), so I don't know what she does to score them. :shock:

Yes as long as it is a QF lounge. So in MEL you can (or if you get *A access through status or flying business I'd visit the nice NZ lounge instead). Just beware that QF do not announce non-OW flights, and if there is a delay the monitors may not be showing the correct info. Otherwise the QF F lounge in MEL is nice.

In LAX UA flies from a different terminal (and the lounges are airside) so no access to QF lounges in T4 or TBIT.

In SFO there is no QF lounge.

Perhaps she flies on rebated tickets,,,you know son, daughter, husband being QF employee. You'd know if she happens to be the last to board, without "priority" tag on baggage.

Congratulations on the Platinum (nearly). It is really worth it. I also qualified about a couple of years ago flying economy, and I half expected streamers to fall from the ceiling - it is no easy feat. Fortunately I fly business almost always now - I qualified earlier this year in only 6 weeks.

As for upgrades, I get them probably 15-20% of the time. Most recently on Iberian from EZE to Madrid (where first was like normal business anyway). Can't say it has anything to do with the Platinum card though - last week I was upgraded EC to BC on only my second ever Austraian Airlines flight (KUA - SYD), and I have no status at all with Star Alliance.

In fact, I think I was probably upgraded more when I was only QF gold, flying EC.:idea:

What was really nice, wass being able to access the first class QF lounge in Sydney before my SYD - KUL flight, even though I wasn't travelling One World. Also accessed QF lounge in AKL a few months back when I was flying Aerolineas Argentinas.

Best things about Platinum - the lounge access (even when not travelling One-World), the first class checkin (especially in HKK!!!!!!), and the being able to get thru to Qantas on 131313 without having to wait in queue for half an hour. They even seem a little bit friendlier, or am I just imagining that?????

I'm proud of the fact that I achieved WP in 6 months (Sept 2001 - March 2002) flying on regional routes (BNK-SYD return), although Qantas did introduce double points and SCs - maybe to get me hooked. It worked:!:

The double points and SC promotion was great ; My membership year had just started and I managed to get 1100 SCs and 100,000 miles in 70 hours

Indeed it was a great promotion. I got to Platinum two years earlier than I otherwise would have.
