Does anyone know how the Australian Government justifies the LAG policy that prevents us from buying a bottle of gin at, say, HKG duty free and bringing it into Oz? We are on the airside, for goodness' sake, when we buy it (or try to). We have been through security and are not carrying anything larger than 100ml.

Does the Government think some airside employee might have tampered with a bottle of gin?

The US (and to a lesser extent Canada) has the same policy. What about the other 192 countries in the world? Don't they care? Or do they have a modicum of common sense?

Hear Hear... absolutely unbelievable. Maybe the government is supporting our duty free operators?

While keeping duty free within Australia could be a cause, the strange thing is that Duty Free in Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia are pretty much all owned by the same people (Nuance Watson group). So that's a little strange.

How is it strange? In Oz they earn $20/bottle in profit but in HKG they earn $10/bottle so of course they oils want to sell more in Oz.

It is basically corruption again.

Thanks, but none of the above answer the question. Corruption/collusion etc, which may of course exist, have nothing to do with an Australian Government regulation. And they do not cover, of course, the 192 countries in the world that do not prevent citizens from importing liquids bought on the airside.

I repeat, what is the Australian Government's reason for imposing this rule?

They brought it in when America did. I don't know if the UK follow the same rule anymore. Absolutely no reason to do it, you already get the scan prior to entering the Duty Free area

I love the fact that they glibly claim it is for security reasons - yet they will happily encourage you with retail opportunities to buy bottles (hey - why not two bottles??) on the way OUT of the country. Pure corruption
