Hi all,

we are keen to use our FF's for the 2012 olympics. Do you think QF will have blackouts over the period for FF's? When do you think we should book if they will allow bookings? thanks for your advice!!

My only advice is that if you are able to get any award tickets for dates of the Olympics, get them ASAP and once you get an option that you might like, just book it!

Remember you can always cancel and change a booking (even if it is for a fee of a handful of thousands of points), but if there are no award seats then it's just that, there will be none.

I wouldn't say QF will black out the period as much as it will be the same availability as normal but due to popular demand they will just disappear faster, as will all inventory on flights for that matter, period.

What class (Economy, Business, First) are you thinking of traveling in? Keep in mind that without status with QF, the higher the class of seat the more difficult it will be to redeem an award. This is especially true since you are looking for 2 seats.

You may also want to consider arriving and departing perhaps 1/2 to 1 week about the actual games (unless you have no choice, or aren't staying for the entire games).

Thanks for the reply.

Well only be going cattle class and pretty flexible on dates. The only thing that's a bit weird, I was playing around with bookings and you can't return more than a year ahead. I get that you can only book a year ahead but not being able to select the return date means we won't be able to book until the date we want to return in a year, if that makes sense.

Not sure if this has changed as I'm sure this didn't use to be the case. I guess well cross our fingers!!

That is correct. As all FF tickets are effectively one way it really does not matter. You just need to weigh up the current availability outbound, and whether it will still be there, against waiting for the return dates to open up.

Also look at flying into different ports say FRA and making it by train or another carrier to London. could be an easier way of redeeming points.

I managed to fly to Beijing for the 2008 Olympics on QF on FF points. I actually booked quite late in the scheme of things (3-4 weeks out).

I would suggest if you are prepared to get there after it starts and leave before it ends, you should have no problem.
