I believe I left a book in my literature pocket on VA0867 MEL-SYD last Friday evening. I've called several times, and each time they say it hasn't been logged and I should call back in 24-48 hours.

Is there a way to get them to actually take my details down, and proactively check the aircraft? I know what seat I was in. I know the flight number and can probably find the registration online (looks like VH-YFY); in any event, they would be able to tell which airframe it was.

I left my suit on the aircraft (crew member stored for me, I forgot to grab it), I called the number, they told me the same thing, "you will be called back in 24 - 48 hours". I then advised I will return to the airport to enquire, the lady was quite adamant this is a bad idea as the airport workers will simply tell me to go home and wait for the phone call.

I wasn't impressed with the call centre lady, also doubted the information I received, jumped on the Skylink bus and returned to Melbourne airport, spoke to the lady at the service desk who seemed annoyed I was there. She radioed the gate I'd arrived at, they told her my suit bag had been left at the gate. 15 minutes of security line pain, I was reunited with my suit.

All up unimpressed with the call centre response and information. Your best bet in the future is to return to the gate and see if it was found by the crew or cleaners and left at the gate.

I know somebody whose laptop slipped out of their bag in the overhead locker earlier this week on a SYD-MEL flight. The aircraft continued to operate MEL-BNE, and the laptop showed up at BNE today.

The aircraft which operated 01DEC23 VA867 was indeed VH-YFY, and you should contact SYD, ADL and MEL baggage services individually - especially ADL where it parked overnight.

I found out this week that BNE baggage services can be contacted by email on [email protected], you may want to try the same format replacing BNE...

Thanks for the tip. I've addressed individual emails to the SYD and MEL offices (by substituting in the address above) but apparently there's no such ADL email. I guess we'll see what shows up.
