Lounge access with PE booking but business class seat allocation, no status?

I saw a tweet wondering if this person was eligible for lounge access departing NZ. They have no QF/one world status, a PE booking all the way from NZ - Oz - US. There was no answer to that thread.

But it appears a PE booking departing NZ nets you a business class seat on the 737 across the Tasman. Whereas you get economy with an Oz 737 origin.

Technically I think the answer is no they shouldn't have lounge access in NZ or Oz for a PE booking. But in practice.... does anyone know what happens? They do have a business class seat which typically gives access but it would be weird to have lounge access departing NZ but not from Australia.

Flying soon and hope I remember to ask at the lounge but does anyone else have any experience with this situation?

Out of curiosity does anyone know if this occurred prior to the NZ-QF agreement?

Yes they have lounge access out of the NZ port before the QF service across the tasman, but not at the AU port for the onwards flight.

This scenario has existed for many years, long before any NZ/QF agreement.

The same happens on AA W fares ex-NZ via SYD/MEL/BNE to the US.
