Lounge etiquette - sleeping in lounges

I'm keen to hear what everyone's thoughts are on the etiquette surrounding sleeping in lounges, particularly when it comes to the fancier lounges such as the Qantas/oneworld first lounges in Melbourne, Sydney, LAX, Singapore and similar.

Most (if not all) of these lounges don't offer any sort of sleeping or snoozing space. I know some lounges in the middle east and the Singapore first lounge offer a resting area with at least reclining seats, if not a dedicated room to sleep in for a period of time. However, for Qantas in particular, despite their amazing food and beverage offerings, a space to sleep or nap seems to be missing.

What then is the ettiquete on sleeping in lounges? Do you just take your shoes off and try and minimise contact of socks to seat? Keep shoes on? Sleep upright? Try and sleep in the shower room? Sleep in one of the business spaces at the desk (just like at work 😂)

Not all lounges even have a space out of sight where you can proverbially (and perhaps literally) put your feet up. For less than 8 hours, it's also probably not worth getting a hotel nearby - sometimes due to visa restrictions it might not even be possible. What do you do?

And for those of you who say you'd never sleep in a lounge - unfortunately not all flights can be lie flat! Ah, the first world problems of a road warrior.

I have slept on the floor of a pay per use lounge once, as others were doing at the time, and when all sleeping rooms were booked out. But I haven't slept (or otherwise laid on the floor) of a status based lounge, or at least, that I recall.

Unless the seats recline or are actually made for sleeping, then I'm in the 'probably sleep elsewhere' camp these days. Ideally, in a bed.

I try very hard not to sleep in lounges.
Unfortunately I had to spend the night in an A3 lounge at ATH not that long ago due to storms and subsequent flight cancellations.

I found a quiet corner, grabbed a footstool and put on my silk eye mask.
Kept my sneakers on.
Took me back to my teens, clubbing before an OMG departure back from IBZ and not in a good way 😂

We have a 20 hour layover in Hong Kong. I wonder if a sleep in the Pier First is an option 😂

I'm a yes for sleeping in lounges, though have done it myself only a few times. In fact, I'm disappointed if an int'l lounge does not offer a place for a snooze (a sofa, a proper recliner, or even a place made for naps). I sleep poorly during flights and during a longer connection would really appreciate a good nap.

Well Qantas lounges are not open over night so no real need, although SYD F does have recliner arm chairs.

In the AY first lounge at HEL they have a curtained off area with some sleeper lounges but no one was using them that I could see.

If no dedicated sleep pods or area then I think best to book a transit hotel. Sleeping in lounge might just see someone steal your purse/wallet.

I have slept a few times on the sofas in the Silverkris lounge in Singapore. The staff there even provide blankets and pillows. The lounge is quite empty from around 1 am until early morning.

You haven't gone with The Regal Hotel option that I think was discussed in a previous thread @Pushka ?
I did notice the signage when in HKIA recently, though we discounted it due to the $$ and stayed in Kowloon instead - we had 24+ hours.
But in the end with my shabby ankle ( no sightseeing) and crazy "Uncle" taxi ride - The Regal might have been a more sensible option !

Yes. Just joshing. Booked in at Novotel City gate.

AY business (non-Schengen) has plenty of sofas and there usually are several people dozing off on them.
I use the lockers for my stuff. Most of them have a numeric access code so there's no key to fish out from your pocket, either.

Done it lots of times - much nicer in a lounge compared to the old days of trying to sleep in airports, . I pick a spot out of the way, and keep my shoes on. Just remember to set an alarm on your phone so you don't oversleep and miss your flight.

ATH - is it not a Town in Belgium? or is it Athens? And What are "OMG departures" for the uninitiated and naive? (me)

They now also have a separate "sleeping" room. Smallish so normally is quite full.

In the general area of the Silverkris Business Lounge the old Silverkris Lounge was probably better than the renovated and relocated one for sleeping/napping as there was a pretty quiet area down what used the be the far end of the lounge.

To Europe we often deliberating book a long layover so that both flights are during the day, and for overnight we book a hotel room.

I remember the Lufthansa Lounge in Frankfurt has nice sleeper areas. But the Lounge dragons can be overwhelming.

You don’t need to shout. I can hear you 😂
ATH is the code for Athens airport.
OMG stands for Oh My God which is very early in the morning departures.

I have used those in the Business Silverkris Lounge this year.

I checked out the SQ *A lounge at T3 back in August and while there is plenty of bench space where one could kip, I did not notice any special sleeping areas.
