Can't say i saw this one coming...

Virgin Australia will become the first carrier since 2004 to offer business class travel to and from Mackay when it launches its luxury services along with a new lounge by the end of the year.

CEO and Managing Director John Borghetti, who is co-hosting a welcome reception for Members of State Parliament in Mackay today, says the region is an important market for the country...

Virgin Australia operates 41 services each week between Sydney and Brisbane to Mackay with more than 4,640 seats across the Boeing 737 and Embraer E-Jet

From News - Queensland Business Review

So Qantas got the jump on an announcement, but who will come out on top… what QF aircraft service MKY again? Are they Q400’s? :p

Smart move - I fly into MKY regularly and more often than not, the 737-800 is full, with a lot travelling beyond BNE (especially to ADL on a Friday afternoon).

I would have never picked MKY.

I was hoping for Mackay. I travel to the region (MKY,PPP,HTI) frequently and the Lounge will be a real welcome pleasure.

Now if I can only have a win with a Lounge at ROK and flights (for starters) into GLT

Co-operation from the airport would be a major step in getting a lounge. Strange how QF and DJ announce new lounges at the same time!

Let's hope Virgin goes out of their way to make their lounge bigger and better than Qantas.

LOL you have obviously never been in the QF lounge in Mackay. you could throw a shoe box in the departures area with a "QF LOUNGE" sticker on it and possibly trump the incumbent with square meterage!

Was about to say that. A fridge in the corner of a empty room does not warrant being called a lounge.

With all due respect I suggest both of you have missed the QF announcement about the NEW MKY premium lounge:

I am surprised they did not call the addition of a toilet to the existing lounge 4 years ago a Premium Lounge! The fact the new one has 80 pax capacity suggests the fridge in a corner (which is in fact not the case for MKY regardless) a thing of the past!

The QF lounge in Mky is more like a closet. In the departures area in Mky there is an up stairs area so maybe the new lounges will go up there...Currently that area is all covered up but you can see some of the steps...

Your effing kidding me... DARWIN, a CAPITAL CITY can't get a lounge, but Mackay does....

THATS WHY I FLY QANTAS!!!

Yes but MKY has 6 DJ flights a day,DRW-3
Even here on the Sunny Coast we have 2-4 DJ flights a day with double Darwin's population.

Mmmmm, flew out of MacKay on QF a few weeks ago and didn't even relaise there was a QF lounge there. The checkin agnet didn't highlight the fact either. So I was sitting out in the general depatures area for 90mins, paying for cups of tea. :-|

Yet Cairns has a brand new huge Qantas Club...

Once again, its proving my point, thats why I fly Qantas.

Gold Coast is bigger than all of them. Qantas don't even fly there. As is Newcastle and there's bugger all QF there too.
