This was our special place picked out for this trip.I search Michelin starred restaurants.Try and find one outside of a big city which is associated with a boutique hotel. So this place is in Kruiningen, the Netherlands and well and truly in the countryside. The restaurant just called Inter Scaldes has held 2 Michelin stars since 1984.The present owner and chef has been here since 2001.The hotel is part of the Relais and Chateaux group.
Now we were not quite in the relaxed mood we should have had to really appreciate the place having lost a day of the European part of our trip and being without our luggage. We arrived at about 1630 after driving straight from Orly airport and an overnight flight.Despite that we were wowed. So first the room and surrounds-

And the view from our room-

The lovely breakfast room-

And just to prove it is in a rural area the view from the other side of the hotel-

When I come back from Happy Hour I will deal with the real highlight-our evening meal..

We both refreshed ourselves with a nice long soak in a hot bath.We felt refreshed and were able to see dinner through without feeling tired. The outside of the buildings look old.Inside however it is quite modern.good use of artworks to decorate the building-

So to the menu.First the 2 starting courses-

The presentation was interesting. The Amuse maison was really interesting with each little ball a burst of flavour. Then the octopus.Very nice. Was one of mrsdrron's favourites.Tender and flavoursome-

And of course we needed a nice Sancerre to wash it all down-

Next we both opted for the extra caviar course. Now we are not the the greatest worshippers of caviar but this was simply outstanding. It used Royal Dutch caviar.Less salty and better to our taste. The caviar rested on finely sliced white grapes with a custard of potato and sea sturgeon.Wonderful combination of flavours-

The next was my favourite.Just amazing what was done with peking duck and a popcorn foam.Sensational.The second pic shows the duck layer-

Next the scallops another great dish followed by lemon sole. This rated last on my list but still was an excellent fish dish with interesting flavours from the onion and parsnip-

Mrsdrron probably rated the lamb as last on her list but the presentation and unusual combination of flavours pleased me-

I also had the optional cheese.A great array of Dutch and Belgian cheeses.

Then the dessert which was sensational.Old fashioned small strawberries bursting with flavour. And sensational flavours again-
