The company is flying me SYD to SIN 19/9 and return 2/10. They'll want to pay for a cheap econ ticket on QF. I'm closing in on Plat. and want to maximize the SC for this trip. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Would a flight SYD-MEL-SIN make much difference? Can points be used to upgrade to a better class?

Thanks,
Paul

Adding SYD-MEL on a cheapie will add 10SCs as SYD-SIN and MEL-SIN as same earn.

If you do the same on return, that's 20 more.

Qantas have an online tool:

https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/initialPointsEarned

So you can plug in options.

SYD-MEL-SIN = 40SC in discount Y (as would SYD-BNE-SIN)
SYD-SIN = 30SC
SYD-PER-SIN =45SC
SYD-MEL-PER-SIN = 55SC

There's not a huge range of options for SYD-SIN to garner a whole lot extra without upgrading (fare) class.

You can upgrade, but wont get the SCs (only for original class).

An alternative would be to use an anyseat award in J at least in one direction (ie. you pay miles, but you earn some back, plus get SCs for the flight.) A classic award does not earn SCs or miles.

Do you have any opportunity to fly premium economy on one leg? BA's premium economy isn't a patch on Qantas but it is cheaper. You get double the SC's compared to discount economy too.

Thanks to the GFC I'm doing all of my overseas travel at the less than pointy end of the plane, it is hard going reaching and maintaining platinum. I'll be flying BA premium economy on my next two European trips though. It sure helps to beef up the SC's. :)

How about SYD-MEL-PER-SIN-MEL-SIN?

It is 95 SCs and is essentially the same price as SYD-SIN return although you would need an overnight in PER.

Another is SYD-MEL-SIN-PER-MEL-SYD not requiring an overnight anywhere and still 95 SCs or even SYD-PER-SIN-MEL-SYD for 85 SCs.

I try to avoid flying direct unless absolutely necessary and my final destination is BKK.

The permutations are not quite endless but you get the drift....
