Hi,

Welcome to my first post.

I am looking for ways to increase my QF FF status (currently bronze, about to tip over to Silver) and also determine the least expensive way of joining the Qantas Club.

My current travel plans see me in Sydney 2 - 3 times a month (Brisbane is home) and occasionally Melbourne or other Australian cities. I also will have a need to travel to the US 2 or 3 times a year from now on.

The majority of my travel is economy, availing of the cheapest fare that's available, but as it's usually last minute, this quite often is a super saver fare or higher.

I also tend to use points to do an upgrade to business fares using my points on occasion, but I don't believe that this leads to SC upgrades.

Any thoughts / guidance would be greatly appreciated. :)

Welcome to AFF.

Not much you can do flying to Sydney, perhaps if it is last minute pick the more fare that will earn as economy and not discount economy.

For longer trips, to melbourne, then you get more SC if you transit in Sydney. 2 difference flight numbers gives 2 separate lots of earning.

Save your points for buying business any seat awards (JASA) as these will earn business SC. Look for a classic award availability on the flights that you want but then book as a JASA. This is rarely going to be possible at the last minute, so something to save for when you have more advanced notice.

Flying to the US; again fly via Sydney. Where do you go in the US? You could look at YUPP fares for domestic US travel.

Welcome to AFF.
For Qantas Club you could join this site as a Gold Member and take advantaged of the discounted corp rate.

or you could make it to Qantas Gold (SG) (where you effectively get Qantas Club for free)

How much do you want go spend?

Who books your tickets.

How far in advance do you plan to fly?

Can you get lat minute tickets, create some urgency about your travel?

If you’re flying return to just SYD 2 times a month all year, that’s *counts on fingers* 480SC a year. Add to that a couple US trips and mix that up with other Australian cities and I can see you hitting SG with a bit of effort and re-qualifying for it fairly easily, yearly.

If you absolutely have to get into the lounge before that though, you could consider joining this site as a paid member (information found here) and you’ll save some money on your Qantas Club membership as the site has a corporate scheme. That’s of course assuming you can’t use the corporate scheme for whatever company you work for ;)

My rule for maximising SC earn is "Why fly direct, when you can connect?".
However this isn't always going to work for business travel where time is king.

Fortunately, in the US, it's more the rule than exception. AAirlines love to hub things rather than fly direct ;)

If you're wanting information on the best bang for buck, do a search on here for YUP/KUP runs. There's some good suggestions. Just find one that's going to suit your business needs if you can, that saves you travelling for the sake of earning SC's only.
