Need to buy a return HKG-SIN ticket departing mid Jan and returning early Feb. What am I looking at in terms of SC possibilities? CX seems to be the only oneworld airline flying direct at $600 return or so; also noticed United at $500 return in Economy.

Also noticed that JetStar does this run, but are SCs available for that?

To get SC's on the Jetstar flights you would need to book Jetflex, which would give the full economy SC's.

Looks like 80SC return for that - seems pretty decent for what is an airfare costing A$520 or so. Pity there doesn't appear to be StarClass on that run.

I don't know what fare class you're getting for AUD600 on CX for that route. If you can, fly CX J as it'll get you 160SC in total.

Or grab a cheapie to TPE and them get a J return for a heck of a lot more SC's.

It would be a discount economy fare - most likely V class, which would only get 0.5 points per mile flown.

J would be closer to $2.5K for CX on that route.

I agree, by comparison for AUD$1K you can get Y to TPE then J to SIN via HKG return.

It's in L on the CX website. When I searched yesterday the website offered to upsell me to the next fare class for greater flexibility but for some reason that doesn't come up now. The quote on J is A$2,600 but I'm not sure it's worth it for a 3.5 hour flight.

Edit: UA Business is US$1363, so approx. A$1393. What is J in their 747-400 like?

In terms of SCs, Jetstar flex and one of the Cathay J options are the only flights worth considering. You can also consider flying CX to BKK and then Jetstar flex from there to SIN, but I'm not sure if that's worth the time and effort.

That being said, I only need 40 SCs to get QF Silver, so CX economy is fine - I can't see myself flying enough to get Gold.

3K Jet flex HKG-SIN fare ~$3300HKG return (~$450-500AUD) - 80SC's earned.
Note this counts as two QF qualifying flights towards 4 minimum required each year.

CX return in Y should be 40SCs exactly. While there's no pillows/food on 3K, it's only a 4 hour flight, so you might as well go with the cheaper one. (Note you must get the flex fare on 3K to qualify for the SCs).

3K operates the A320 on this route, CX operates mostly the 777, a few A330, and, occasionally a 744.

I'll be connecting from a FCO-HKG overnighter so the comforts of the 777 are also appealing.

How many SCs do I get for going via BKK with CX (that is another possibility)

I'm not completely familiar with how SCs are credited for such flights, but it is on the same flight number, so if I was to take a guess, you'll get exactly the same SCs as the direct flights despite the extra distance.

Sounds like the same problem as the HKG-MEL flight that stops in Adelaide.

People have also talked about status runs by flying MEL-SYD via CBR, but I assume different flight numbers makes that a different proposition SC wise to get 20 instead of 10 each way?
