Hi,
I'm traveling to Shanghai in late July, and want to maximise my Velocity status credits / points per $ spent on the flights. I can take a few days on either side to add stops if needed. Any ideas from the FF masters on this site?!

Many thanks!

Can you even get to Shanghai from Sydney on a Velocity Rewards partner?

Velocity - Route map

Looks like it would be on Malaysia Airlines using their earn Chart. I don't think you'll earn any status credits though on MH.

Otherwise, I suppose you could fly to HKG on Virgin Atlantic, and then buy a separate ticket. It's still only 2000 status credits in economy, or 5 return trips to HKG for Velocity Silver.

If you want status credits, then BNE/MEL-HKT is better value (in SCs), as long as you don't fly on a V Promo fare.

BNE-HKT is ~4404mi
V Deal / V Saver will only earn at 0.5x so = 2200 SCs each way.
V Flexi will earn at 1.0x so = 4400 SCs each way.
Premium will earn at 1.25x, so = 5500 SCs each way.

This doesn't take into account the 20% or 40% bonus for Silver / Gold.

NB, Shanghai Airlines flies direct HKT-PVG, but some other frequentflyer.com.au members have had problems booking flights from HKT because of Thai regulations, IIRC.

You could fly Syd - hong kong on Virgin Atlantic and connect from there. VS flights now earn status on DJ although the amount is fixed according to the sector length. There is a chart on velocity web site.

Maybe SYD-Bangkok-Hong Kong on Emirates........

You can only earn FF points not status on Emirates. The only Status Options are VA via coughet or Virgin Atlantic via Hong KOng.

Thanks for the replies. Looking at my other planned travel with VB for the year, I think it will be hard to make it to Silver regardless. Might look to maximise FF points on the trip instead.
