Want to spend 3-4 weeks in the US, leaving MEL in early Jan. Need to get to BOS and NYC, and then will do other internal AA flights (e.g. ATL, SJU - the latter for SCs).

Am I best to book MEL-LAX or MEL-SYD-DFW via QF direct and then book the rest through AA? QF is quoting like $3500 for MEL-DFW-BOS return!

The best choice will depend on your priorities, so is your preference based on cheapest fare, shortest travel time, maximum points, status credits, direct routing, or other, for this part of your itinerary?

For a combination of reasons, we have just flown MEL-LAX-JFK on QF, with a mirrored return, then used Delta JFK-BOS (the only option that fitted our schedule).

From BOS, we switched to AA for cross country flights.

The QF flights were a companion fare deal, so that influenced the decision this time.

The other practical option for NYC-BOS, depending on your circumstances, is the train. Compares favorably with the short flight, which always (IME) suffers delays out of NYC airports.

Go straight through on Qf to JFK. Plenty of options to BOS from there including the Acela which is quicker than flight.

If you want to obtain SC, easier from LAX or HNL, however look at JFK Bos ord dfw slc Mia then aua or other bahamas destinations.

Maybe better to do sc run out of lax, get a stopover on a through fare to JFK when (if) you return there.

That works well.

I was going to suggest using JAL as they fly direct NRT-BOS with the 787.Then looked it up-crazy pricing-$15000 return in Y,$7100 in J.
However a Circle pacific fare may be a goer if you can fit in a few more flights but generally not great value in Y.

$15,000 NRT-BOS return, WTF? Surely that can't be true!

I wouldn't mind a Circle Pacific fare, happy to always visit SIN or HKG. Does anyone have any experience booking these or RTWs on CX out of TPE, probably in J? Would that be similar value to the much touted TPE-AUS CX J run?

Is there any limitation on the stopover? And in terms of booking do i just use the AA multi-city engine and change the dates of the flights to 'create' the stopover period?
