Hi all,

Recently my P flight from MEL - LAX for the end of November got cancelled (which I'm assuming is due to the A380's not returning..) and after contacting Qantas, they have swapped my flight to MEL - SYD - LAX (with the first leg in economy and second leg in first).

I asked for a nice and early flight to ensure I've got plenty time in the first class lounge, but curious for my flight from MEL - SYD, would I be allowed to just check in for the domestic leg (so I can experience the first class checkin in SYD) as opposed to checking in for the entire trip in MEL? Even if I could, is it worth an hour less in the lounge to experience the first class check in?

Absolutely not (worth it).

Going from T3 to T1, you get to experience the full process, except the actual check in part. You are not missing anything at all.

You will be dropped off just before passport control, which is where pax go after check in, so you don't skip much.

I don't think the First Class check in is anything special, it's just a bit nicer than standard check in - but nothing memorable.

so you can see what you'll skip by as the service from domestic drops you as mentioned above

the First minute of this vid highlights the Porter curbside service and the "exclusive" First Check-in

and get to the lounge, book in a Spa service in the pre-flight phone call they apparently do, enjoy fine champagne and the fairy floss dessert!

The F Checkin is just a sectioned off area - which makes it "exclusive"🤣. It's otherwise just another bog standard checkin no different to J checkin. I wouldn't trade it for less time in the FLounge.

Roadside porter no but I've heard CLPO (Chairman's Lounge members who are also Platinum ones) can still ring ahead to for this service?

Assuming you are checking bags, even if QF did allow you to re-check in (I'm not sure they would), you would be ineligible for the airside transfer service due to the bags, so you would need to use the much slower T bus or pay for a train or taxi to take you to T1. Not good.

As per the others - honestly not worth it. Better to check in at MEL international connections desk and go from there. Since you wind up at SYD T1 I guess you can go check out the check in (see what I did there? :P ) but really it's just not even terribly exciting. Just go through security/departures and up to the Flounge imo.

enjoy your flights (and glad you got an early departure from MEL - I did that too recently so there was just no stress with the connection, SYD T1 security and all that and could truly relax in the lounge).
