Hi. I'm new here. I'll be flying from Melbourne to JFK for the first time in January for work. My work has given us two options for flights (both Economy class):

Qantas Boeing 747
MEL->SYD->LAX->JFK total travel time 24 hrs

or

Emirates
777
MEL->DXB
A380
DXB->JFK total travel time 28 hrs 35 mins

Which one would you recommend for me to book? Which one would be more comfortable considering it's long haul? I do have Emirates Skywards, but the miles wouldn't be enough to warrant an upgrade.

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I vote the EK optn.
Depending how long the layover is at DXB.
Flying in Y - two things to avoid:
Transfering DOM-INTL @ SYD...
Landing at LAX as first point into the US (Then transfering to an onward flight)..

Think I would tend towards EK for the reasons david has mentioned.
Whichever airline you use make sure you earn points. :)

What is your status with QF?

Who do you want a longer term relationship with?

QF MEL-SYD-LAX-JFK : 10,974 QFF Miles / 70 Status credits (Discount Y) - one way

EK MEL-DXB-JFK Return 32,000 Skywayds Miles / 25,000 Tier Miles.

Two return trips a year on EK gets you Gold Status according to above, compared with five return on QF...

Thats the figure from EK booking engine.. is it right??

Thanks for all your replies :)

The transit in Dubai is only 2 hr 45 mins, so then EK it is.

Thanks everyone!

Bit late to this one, but i'd have voted QF. Their Y product is as good as anyone, and LAX isnt that bad. It's also 4 hrs less travelling.

However, either is a decent option.

Assuming that the EK & QF fares would give you a free stopover en route have you considered breaking the journey in either DXB or West Coast USA eg SFO.

Whilst I don't expect your employer would be for that accommodation it's still a great opportunity to explore another city & ease into the time zone change. If you did choose SFO you only have to do the dom to int transfer at SYD & arriving in SFO is a breeze.

You could then spend a day or two visiting Alcatraz, doing a Segway tour or doing a double decker bus tour which sounds touristy but you pick up fascinating bits of info on the city & is usually valid 24 hours so you could do the tour in the arvo on the first day then in the am the next day. You can hop on and off at the stops along the way.
