I will be passing through MEL next week - first time in at least a month back on Australian soil - arriving from HKG on the afternoon of Dec 8 before departing for AKL on QF133 early evening Dec 10.

Any Melbournians (or others not from MEL who are also passing through) interested in catching up for a drink and/or meal? It does not have to be during the day, but since most people here are working, a get-together at night is probably more appropriate.

To make things more interesting (or worse), you will have to recommend the place(s) to meet.

I am staying at the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf for both nights (8/12 and 9/12).

I may not be able to catch up for long, but I could get a Complimentary ticket for you to see "Up in the Air" on Thursday Evening.

Oh dear. Did I get the date wrong? I thought it was Wednesday night.

anat0l, as it happens, I will be in Melbourne on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and at the Hilton South Wharf on the Tuesday. Looking at bookings there at the moment I'm quietly confident of an executive floor upgrade (HHonors Gold) which, from all reports, sounds like a great lounge. Perhaps we could meet there.

Oops - It is Wednesday night (9th Dec).

The Lounge is on one of the lower floors and is more like a QP.

Im in, you have my mobile, lets have a beer at the bar at the Hilton - Tue is no good for me, mums visiting :)

Mr!

I'll be heading down from Bendigo on Wed 9th before heading off to AKL on Thursday, so I may be able to make something, dependent on what is arranged, and when and where. I'll keep tabs on the thread.

As mentioned on Facebook, I'm happy to catch up. Wednesday evening would work better for me, as I'm playing golf in the morning, so would prefer an early night on Tuesday.

How about we meet in the lobby of the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf at 1830h on Wed 9 Dec?

If I was smarter, I probably should have booked my rooms for 2 people, so that I could guest someone into the Exec Lounge. But my HPC and complimentary upgrades have all been processed, so it's probably a bit too late to do that by now. Plus, by the guest list, someone's gonna miss out anyway...

We can start with a drink (maybe two) at the Hilton's bar, then perhaps move onto another establishment for dinner / more (perhaps better and/or cheaper) drinks. I can't remember how much the drinks were priced at the Hilton South Wharf; even though I have an HPC card that knocks 20% off, I'm sure it's still not going to beat the prices of grog that I've seen in Europe (even in the more expensive establishments).

Preliminary Starting List
  • anat0l
  • penegal
  • munitalP
  • tuapekastar
  • serfty - very tentative

Of course, the more the merrier - anyone else is welcome to join us (including SOs et al.)

What time is the "Up in the Air" showing?

can I have a complimentary ticket too, lol

I could probably make it after work... thanks to Bundy for alerting me to this event.

--Russ

The movie starts at 6.45 (says to arrive by 6.15)

Sorry, anat0l. I was only a starter for the Tuesday night. I'm at the Novotel on Collins St Wednesday and will be going to the HPC movie screening which would rule me out regardless. Thanks anyway.

That's cool; perhaps we can catch up in the Exec Lounge on the Tuesday night anyway for free drinks and canapes. :)

Given that Up in the Air is on the Wednesday night, are there any more people in the current line-up that are seriously considering bailing out of the list? And/Or, is there anyone interested in a post-movie catch-up? (That would be a rather late event, much realised...)

The movie's official runtime is 108/109 minutes, so add 20-25 minutes for trailers and mucking around, so it should finish around 9pm.

Assuming this is true, after movie drinks would be feasiable for me, I'm not sure about others.

I was, and remain, a maybe dependent on what is arranged and when (and how I'm placed at work on Weds). Won't be going to the movies though. :)

After movie drinks would be feasible, but I might also be looking for a bite to eat by that time...

Given Anat0l's post then he won't be seeing the movie Wednesday evening so you are welcome to the remaining seat.
Dear Mr serfty,

Thank you for accepting our invitation for you and a guest to join us at our exclusive movie screening of Up in the Air, below is a confirmation of the evening's proceedings.

Date of Event: Wednesday 9 December, 2009

Time: Arrive by 6.15pm. Movie starts at 6.45pm sharp

Venue: Hoyts Melbourne Central (corner of Swanston and Latrobe Street, Melbourne)
I hope to have the tickets by 5:30pm to hand over. After that I need to head off so if not I'll give the stuff to one of you.

thank you serfty for the ticket and thanks to penegal for catching me just in time... I was getting off a super crowded tram in Melbourne and about to embark on an hour's commute standing room only out to the sticks.

thanks to Bundy Bear for the heads up about the movie and sorry I missed you Anat0l not a lot of transport options out east and I gotta do it again early tomorrow morning, always next time!

--Russ

PS. nice to meet you oz_mark

Well, no one turned up at the Hilton South Wharf at 1830h, although I was a wee bit late because I was coming back from Park & Clarendon doing some laundry, and I took the wrong tram.

With no one around and after confirming a few no-shows, I retired to the Exec Lounge and filled up on evening canapes and a few glasses of sparkling white.

The movie ended a bit earlier than expected, so I quickly made my way to Melbourne Central to catch up with penegal for a couple of pints before he had to go home, what with living in the suburbs of Melbourne, the frequency (infrequency?) of public transport and an early start tomorrow.

As for last night, apologies again to Danger for standing you up, but thanks for coming out a bit later to catch up for a short drink. You'll be glad to hear that my back felt a whole lot better in the morning after a great deal of rest in a much, much, much softer bed than I had in HKG (and a much less stuffy bed than that of CX J).

Nice to catch up with both of you last night.
